Here's an email response I got from Folexen, who sell equol:
Dear Maxhair,
Thanks for your query.
We have not done official clinical trials because it is being provided as a
cosmetic treatment rather than a medication.
However we recently undertook an evaluation of the treatment's
effectiveness, which you can find some details of here:
Note that the examined area was small (1cm x 1cm) and only 45 people were in
the sample. So even though the results are statistically significant, they
should be viewed conservatively. Subjects on equol saw an overall 2.5%
density increase over 6 months within a reasonable confidence band.
We plan on doing some larger studies in the future.
