Balding men offered hope of waking their 'sleeping' hair

Dr Bernard, who presented the findings at the European Hair Research society in Barcelona, said that in people who are going bald, the levels of oxygen around these stem cells have changed, meaning they work less efficiently and so preventing the creating of new hair.
"The stem cells can sense the amount of oxygen around them," he said. "We have identified molecules that mimic the effect of hypoxia on the stem cells. It means we can push the empty hair follicles to make new hair fibres faster."Comment

Scientists have discovered that hair follicles in people who are balding are trapped in a "sleeping" state and are now developing a new treatment to combat baldness.
Is their a chance he is on the l'oreal payroll?Comment

I believe the only hairloss treatment that is missing on the market is "Bullshit for hairloss" in a bottle. Which promises small ammount of thickening hair because of placebo effect. I swear I would buy it because just for once someone isn't trying to sell me shit as something better, actually they would be selling me shit as shit.Comment

Everytime I read about stuff like this I imagine that the reaction would be the same for people who were suffering from something that was cured back in the 80s.
Transplant the problem to now and the people to their own forum and as things progress they keep getting bits and bits of news of this and that that may be a solution.
They give up a little hope each time a new hope is brought up. Eventually something clicks and it all comes together.Comment

This IS the L'Oreal treatment. L'Oreal have a big advertising budget, so expect to hear more about this.
I have to say that despite all the flak Cotsarelis has been getting on forums like this, it's his discoveries that are driving almost all the new treatments we're hearing about.
It all comes from his discovery that bald scalp still has as many stem cells as non-balding, and that those cells just aren't being activated. First PGD2, now this stuff. I don't personally believe this will work but the theory is solid - look for a way to coax the stem cells into hair cells.
And it's coming quite fast - that original discovery wasn't very long ago.
I honestly believe for the next generation baldness will be a choice (and then swiftly lose its stigma). I'm just afraid it'll be too late for us guys and girls.Comment
