Hair is thinning around ear - Help.
So I've been on finasteride for about 6 weeks now, and it hasnt really made a difference to my normal shedding (obviously too early to tell).
Just earlier I noticed that the hair just above my ear is pretty thin (it's always been thinnish, but seems a bit worse lately) and I'm shedding quite a few hairs when I rub my hand through it, the hairs are all the same thickness and length though and don't look miniaturized.
Is this TE from the fin or is it something else?

I dont know. I have been on fin now for 2 1/2 months and I have definitely noticed a shed at about 3 weeks then again at 6 weeks. I have less hair than when I started the fin ,lol.
But they tell me that by 6 months all those hairs should have started to grow in again thicker and stronger so we shall see. We just need to be patient.
The hairs fall out and 'go to sleep' is the reason for the shed. Its normal.

I know very well about the fin shed, but the area of hair where I'm shedding heavily about is supposed to be immune to MPB, so I'm thinking its something else other than MPB or fin.

All of our hairs 'shed' . Not just the ones who slowly or rapidly decay from MPS.
So FIN may cause all of our hair to shed into the sleep cycle quicker. Its just an educated guess. I have no actual idea.
Hope this helps

I've done a bit more research on this and it looks like its retrograde alopecia.
I looked at some old pictures of myself too and it appears it hasnt really gotten much worse in the last 3 years. I've rocked the buzz cut most of my life, so that may be the reason why I've never noticed it before, I've recently grown my hair out and the thinning of the sides has become more visible.
Has anyone else had experience with retrograde alopecia? Could it be down to a vitamin deficiency/poor diet?

Thinning just on the sides?
A vitamin or diet deficiency would also cause all the hairs to suffer. On top and on the back too.
Perhaps you should see a dermatologist .

Can you post a picture of this bald spot? It sounds like Alopecia Areata but i'm not sure.

It looks like this, except nowhere near that extreme. For me it's just the strip of hair next to the ear that is thin.

I am a diffuse thinner and have that exact same thinning around both ears as well as on the back of my head as well. I've lost density all over my head so that led me to wonder if I might have DUPA just not sure. You could just be diffuse thinning meaning you are losing hair all over your head just not in the typical patterned baldness. You've only been on Fin for 6 weeks so maybe re-evaluate after 3-6 months.
