DIY installation vs hiring a specialist floor joiner?

Hello, I’m trying to figure out if I’m biting off more than I can chew here. We want to lay engineered hardwood throughout our hallway and lounge. I consider myself a pretty decent DIYer—I’ve done basic tiling and built stud walls before—but I’ve never laid real timber. The quotes for local wood flooring Edinburgh fitters are quite high, and I’m tempted to just buy the tools and do it myself over a long weekend. Is laying a high-quality tongue-and-groove engineered floor relatively straightforward, or are there hidden traps that a DIYer will inevitably mess up?

If it’s a straightforward square room, a confident DIYer can absolutely do a great job with a floating installation. The real challenge is the hallway with all the doorways, radiator pipes, and trimming the architraves. I bought our engineered planks from http://www.hoffparquet.co.uk/ and decided to do the lounge myself but hired a professional for the hallway. The technical guides provided on their website are incredibly detailed and tell you exactly what expansion gaps you need to leave. If you take your time, use the right underlay, and map out your rows before opening the boxes, it’s a highly rewarding project. Just don't rush the subfloor prep—if your subfloor isn't perfectly flat, the boards will flex later!

Knowing that they provide solid technical guides gives me the confidence to try the lounge myself, thank you!
