    1. What is the difference between asphalt shingle roofing and metal roofing?
Asphalt shingle roofs have been around since the early 1900’s. These roofs were created using asphalt tar mixed with sand and gravel. As time went on, manufacturers began adding different types of granules to the mix. Today, asphalt shingles are manufactured with over 100 different granule sizes. Granules range from 1/8 inch to 2 inches in size.
Metal roofing was first introduced in the 1950’s. Metal roofing uses galvanized steel panels that are attached together with special fasteners. There are many different styles of metal roofing including standing seam, single ply, and modified bitumen. Standing seam metal roofing is the most popular style. Single ply metal roofing is similar to asphalt shingles except that they do not use any type of granules. Modified bitumen metal roofing is a combination of asphalt and rubber. Rubber helps prevent moisture damage while asphalt provides long-term protection.
    2. How does a roofer install a metal roof?
A roofer installs a metal roof by attaching the panels to the rafters of the building. A roofer then attaches the panels to each other with special fasteners called clips. Each panel is installed at a 45 degree angle. Once the panels are attached to the roof, the roofer covers them with a protective layer of felt paper. Felt paper is a thin sheet of material that keeps water out of the seams between the panels.
    3. Why should I choose metal roofing?
There are several reasons why people choose metal roofing over asphalt shingles. First, metal roofing lasts longer than asphalt shingles. Most asphalt shingles last about 20 years before needing replacement. Metal roofing can last 50+ years. Second, metal roofing is much easier to install than asphalt shingles, especially if you don't have experience installing metal roofing. Third, metal roofing is fire resistant. If a fire breaks out on top of your house, metal roofing won't melt like asphalt shingles would. Fourth, metal roofing is less expensive than asphalt shingles over its lifetime. Finally, metal roofing is quieter than asphalt shingles and doesn't make as much noise when walking across it.
