The control arm might be stuck, telling the water valve it's full, or the line might be froze up. It should not be air in the lines, if there was air a1 appliances , it would come out when the valve opened. So the valve is either not opening, or the waterline is plugged. When you were gone, the valve may have tried to open, but it would never fill, so the valve might have burnt out waiting for water.
