Need Advice: 9 year Finasteride user thinking about starting Avodart

    Hello folks,

Ive been on Propecia for 9 years and it halted/slowed my hair loss until this past August. I noticed my temple/corners of my hairline receding and thinning out (left is slightly worse than right). When I noticed this, it brought a great deal of depression and stress.

Before starting propecia, I was a NW1 and now I’m a NW 1.5 headed to a NW2 with the amount of loss I’m seeing between showering/combing/etc.

My dermatologist put me on propecia 1mg this past July (previous derm retired who used to write me a 5mg proscar prescription that I cut in 1/4 which = 1.25mg). I took the 1mg for a month and was ok, but when I switched back to the 1.25mg since August (been taking 1.25 for 9 years), I have started a crazy shed which has lasted now over a week. It’s almost like propecia lost it’s effectiveness.

In panic, I had medicalwellnesscenter.com write me a prescription for Avodart but I’m extremely nervous to start it. The issue is that I’m already shedding lots of hairs, I would only imagine I would shed more on Avodart. Is it wise to wait and see if the shed decreases before starting Avodart or start it right now? I don’t want my hairline to take a huge hit, Propecia slowed the receding hairline to only a -.5 or -1 in the past 9 years but now things seem to be going south.

I did the move a few years back and for what its worth not looked back.

So the time has come after nearly 17 years on 1mg finasteride daily to up the anti and I'm going to start now taking 0.5mg Dutasteride daily instead as i feel I've possibly now started to lose ground in the crown region do to the attack of DHT. Ive had an incredible run with finasteride as it regrew and helped keep my

Thanks for the reply. Im glad that Avodart is working great for you. If you don’t mind answering a question, did you experience shedding when you started? I’ve read nothing but horror stories of it destroying hairlines, Im a NW 1.5 headed to a NW2, it sounds like any frontal loss will surely get me beyond that. I have Avodart sitting here waiting to be taken, but I’m extremely nervous to take the first pill.

Thanks HairGuru. I’m leaning towards continuing on the 1mg finasteride for a few more weeks and ride out the shed. It’s hard to stay positive when you know your hair better than anyone and can definitely see it getting worse by day. If if gets really bad, I’ll jump on avodart as the last attack against DHT.
