What to Expect at the Dermatologist?

I have an upcoming dermatologist appointment for a hair-loss consultation (receding hairline). What should I expect? What does a consultation involve--tests, questions, etc? I am 28 years old and would like to start taking Propecia. I have been using Rogaine for five years. The dermatologist has a general practice but treats hair loss. The dermatologist is young and female, which I am not sure affects anything other than it being slightly embarrassing for me.

    Any feedback/insight is much appreciated.

Has anyone ever gone to the dermatologist for a hair loss consult?

I had two consultations. The first with a local surgeon, the second remotely with the surgeon I eventually selected to perform my procedure.

The first consult (in-person) was remarkably quick. He viewed my scalp for a few seconds. Shared my current Norwood level, assessed how badly the loss would continue to evolve, explained the surgical options that existed, the medicinal options that existed, and offered to write prescription for finasteride. I was in and out and less than 30 minutes.

Neither one was a dermatologist, but I'd imagine the consult will be pretty similar.

I went to the Derm a few years ago and it was pretty much a waste of time. He just looked at my hair and wanted to write me a prescription for Rogaine. After waiting 3 months for my appointment, I was in and out in about 5 minutes.

          That's exactly my experience.

Personally, if you really want to get to the root of what's causing your hair loss and get a good idea of what's going on and what your options are, I think meeting with a IAHRS certified hair transplant surgeon is going to be your best bet. This doesn't mean you necessarily need a hair transplant, but these are the doctors who are going to be much more specialized in hair loss and MPB. A dermatologist may be helpful and provide you some insight, but I don't think that's your best course of action.
