How to apply rogaine liquid to temples?

Hi, I've recently purchased some rogaine spray liquid, it has 2 types of sprays and some rub-on thing. But as it gives directions to the crown, I don't know how to apply it to my thinning temples and front of hair ?

I tend to spray 5 times across the hairline, and tilt my head back as the spray can run down my hair instead of my face. It also helps as the thinning spreads down the middle. However, I've heard rubbing it in means my fingers will get the most of it and not my scalp.
Has any had much luck with applying the liquid? I thought about trying the foam as I don't feel I'm doing it right!

Its worked well for my hairline but dont think it has affected my crown. I spray once on the right hand side of my hairline and rub it up and down then do the same with the left. I just spray 3-4 more times on the crown and rub in
