Is there any way to predict the outcome of a buzz?

So, I've always been a short hair guy - until this year when I noticed my hair was really thinning, I grew it out decently long to cover up the hairline.. I really hate having to deal with this, and I'd really just rather buzz it short like always.

Also, I can't grow a full beard - I guess that's slowing me from trying it as the style is to buzz and beard, and if I don't have a beard people will know I'm not doing it by choice haha...

However, I'm really afraid of exposing my hairline.

By this I mean that with my current length, I can kind of swipe it across my hairline to cover a lot of it up.

But, people always make comments about hairstyles like "buzzing your hair can hide your recession" but I just don't see the logic in that... how would it do that?

Anyway, after the first 5 months on fin, my overall hair quality is better. I essentially have no thinning in the crown - just a thinn-ish cowlick area that is very easy for my to hide right now.

The main reason that I'm afraid to buzz down my hair is that my hairline on the left side comes out to a decent area, but is very very very thin. My right side does not come out as far, but is very thick. It's pretty odd, I think.

Is there any way to predict whether or not a shorter buzz will look alright or do you just have to do it to find out? I.E. when you buzzed your hair, was it what you were expecting/worse/better/etc?

If you have a week or 2 weeks vacation
    Buzz it using a # 2 guard
If you like it , keep it
If not, in two weeks it will grow back and no one will know and difference

At first you will get comments ( from the idiots ) but eventually everyone , including yourself , will get used to it/

Yeah, I'm just worried to what extent my shed will actually show. Also, it's currently a lot longer than 2 weeks growth, I haven'y really touched my hairline since september and have been buzzing the sides and maintaining the crown, which is where I have much thicker hair than my hairline.
