Can I still go bald even on Finasteride?

I we have sufficient proof at this point that androgens almost completely control the path of MPB its more a question of is propecia good enough? I question the idea of altering hormones internally though and even more so with dutasteride its just really hard to believe such a potent male hormone has no other roles but I guess its possible.
I think though T plays some role in MPB along with DHT and where are all the studies on androgen receptors and how hair is sensitive to androgens? Are layouts of receptors different in twins? So many questions and so few answers.Comment

I have noticed that some men without a trace of MPB have a slightly more feminine overall appearance.

I beleive, for the most part, DHT levels during puberty are the big determining factor for masculine characteristics etc...But I have heard of guys on powerful things like dut/spiro saying they thought there facial features were slightly changing/softeningComment

A poster on *** started taking Dut at 17 with a NW2 or 3 pattern.
Not only did he completely regrow thick temples to a NW1 hairline, he also posted bodybuilding progress pictures. By 21 he was pretty jacked and lean.
I don't think DHT inhibitors can inhibit muscle growth or development. Is there any proof that it does?Comment

I am a pro fin dude, and even I agree with this. I believe you have to treat your hairloss asap, but men are still developing until about 21 years.Comment

I'm going to tell how I handled the fear for potential effects on my development so that if any kid my age sees this, he can hopefully put a stop to his hair loss, which is the real problem, not side effects or theories.
1. Endocrinologist said I was way done with puberty, and gave me the OK for Finasteride. I had an x-ray taken of my growth plates, and he let me know they were already fused.
2. Dermatologist prescribed it to me, and told me it could not affect me in any adverse way besides the 2% chance for sides (and gyno).
3. If a guy is already experiencing aggressive balding, that should say something about his development.
4. There is no proof, or evidence, that Fin stunts growth in 18 year old's and up (I'm less than 2 months from turning 18, let's not get technical lol). That's all just theory, like the theory that Finasteride causes permanent infertility. No proof.
5. My urologist, who prescribes Finasteride to even more patients than my dermatologist, said that it is impossible for Finasteride to stunt whatever penis growth I have left (not that I need anymore down there).
6. Both the Endocrinologist and Urologist said that it would only be a problem if I was 14 or was in the middle of very late puberty, which is not the case.
Trust me, I've covered this from every single possible angle. I've spoken to an endocrinologist, dermatologist and even a urologist about Finasteride, it's effects, it's possible long term effects and usage for someone my age. I had blood tests done, x-rays, physicals, you name it.
I feel like anyone who is going to take any medication should go through this process, especially if they're on the younger side. I believe you'll usually find yourself taking the medication anyway though.
My only worry, like the title of this thread states, is going bald despite treatment.
Now that would really suck.Comment

Your choice was wise & would have been even w/o checking your growth plates. Hair = face....you should not even consider sacrificing your face for an extra inch or 2 except in extreme situationsComment

I noticed the hair, but I was referring to the smooth appearance of the one brother's arm compared to the other that has prominent blood vessels near the surface.

Is a high degree similarity in appearance between a pair of twins any reason to assume they are monozygotic twins?
With lotions, I'll believe it when I see differences on a pair of siamese twins.Comment

Hey Chuck.
I read that our testosterone starts to fade at age 30 and by age 50 we have half the amount. I have also been told that at age 65 we dont have enough testosterone to convert to DHT at levels to destroy hair follicles . What we have at 65 is what we got.
If we took DUT or Fin until age 50 at least, wouldnt we then still keep most of our hair after that even if we quit cold turkey? Let me know your thoughts.
Yet Hamilton and Later Norwood have stated this is not true. I was reading an old Norwood article last week and he basically says that with increasing age men keep getting balder AND more men start going bald. I have never understood this since hormones decline with age. Yet I know it is true as I have seen it happen to people I know. My dad never showed any sign of mpb till about 70, then he started getting the spot in the back. A doctor I know socially always had thick hair and never showed any signs of mpb till around 69-70 when his crown started thinning out.
My only guess is it must be T/DHT + something else that controls balding. And you must not need much of it for men at that age to start balding.Comment

What you stated above has always confused the heck out of me. When you older your t and dht drops so should balding?

I think there is some key factor with hair that is hugely understudied or missing having to do with how hair interacts with androgens. However hair is sensitive to the androgens has to play a huge role in this its never been about the levels of androgens as it is how your hair reacts to what you have. Maybe as you age hair develops higher concentrations of receptors or the receptors become more responsive to any androgen presence so even though absolute DHT levels drop off the increased sensitivity more then makes up for it and causes MPB to speed up and progress. It has to be something like that since propecia loses effectiveness over time also so hair adapts to androgen levels its not constant. We lack good studies on how hair is sensitive to androgens though and its a big piece.Comment

I have friends who have been taking all kinds of steroids, some of which greatly increase DHT levels, and they are solid NW1s.
Unfortunately, just because you are balding doesn't mean you are some testosterone-jacked manly macho man.Comment
