Is there any proof the 100 hairs lost a day stat is true?

I've always doubted it, I've asked a lot of my friends to try and take notice how many they lose a day for a few days and none of them said more than 20, this includes those in the shower etc..

Even on bad shedding days for me I think 100 would be high. I've always seen the 100 figure thrown about but I've never seen any studies proving it, I know the whole total number of hairs vs. those in telogen phase gives a number of about 100 but I just don't see that as the case.

I definitely agree. I've only noticed maybe 10-20 at most naturally shedding when I'm in the shower or brushing my hair. It doesn't seem like 100 a day is very realistic. That '100' figure is probably outdated/poorly proven/poorly supported data. Granted, many people may have shorter anagen growing phases, and longer catagen, so this number is definitely not impossible, but it seems like it was a study done poorly to represent the general population.

    Nice observation.

It depends on your hair type. If you have really thick/dense hair you can expect 100-150 to be normal. Of you had thin hair to begin, maybe less than 50 is normal. As with most things health related, it's all about the individual.

I shed 100-200/day, but had really thick hair before I started going bald

It's not like you're actually going to notice all 100+ hairs falling all over the place. Hair lost in the shower and on the pillow is not a very good way to see how much hair you've lost that day.
