Hi Folks,
I am a 28 year old man and I'm very concerned I'm losing my hair. Recently I've been noticing a lot of hair coming out in the shower (the other day I counted about 20 in the drain) and on my pillow (sometimes as many as 10 after a single night). It sometimes seems like I can't even lightly pull on any hair on the top of my head without it coming out. I've had some loss already in the temple regions, and while I'm not ecstatic about that, it wouldn't be a big deal unless it progressed further. I guess that makes me a Norwood 2 at this point.
My family history of baldness is varied. My mother's father had a completely full head of hair his whole life. My mother's mother's father was bald by the time he was 25. My dad is bald. My dad's brother has always had a full head of hair. My dad's father basically had a full head of hair, except a slightly receded hairline his whole life. Not sure about anyone beyond that.
I'm not sure whether hair type matters, but I do not have hair like my dad and I always assumed this would mean I wouldn't end up bald. His was curly and red, mine is straight and anywhere from light brown to dark blonde, sometimes with reddish highlights. I guess I thought I was going to end up like my dad's dad, with just the receded hairline, now I'm having doubts.
I recently went to the doctor who took a look at the top of my head, said it was still thick, and was very reluctant to prescribe Propecia for me. He wants me to return in a year for an update.
I'm scared of what an entire year will do to me. I wish I could be the type of guy to just embrace it, but truth be told, I've always used my hair as a sort of security. I've had my head shaved before and it looks terrible. My ears kind of stick out and the rest of my head ain't all that attractive to begin with.
So what should I do? Should I schedule an appointment to make sure this isn't hyperthyroidism or a diet deficiency? Start on Minoxidil? Your collective wisdom is appreciated.
