saying hello... and is 1 mg per day of finasteride too much

    Hi All,

This is a great site, wish i had found it years ago. Short bio on my hair loss, i still have a reasonable amount of hair but have noticed considerable thinning (miniturisation) over the last six months and it has really got me down. I first starting losing hair at about age 25 ( i am 40 this year) and got straight onto Minoxidil 2% and then as a result of scalp irritation moved to a minoxidil specially made for me by a chemist 7.5% with azelaic acid. I use it once a day 5 or 6 days a week. I was also on 1.25 mg finasteride for about 7 years and have just restarted this again this month on instructions from my doctor. My hair has looked great up until the last 6 months and now i am in a panic again

    A couple of questions:

I went to see a HT surgeon, best in Australia. He was very helpful, said i should try finasteride again first before doing anything with HT as i still have a lot of hair. I had suffered reduced libido originally but am not sure i can attribute it to finasteride. Anyway, his professional opinion is that 1mg of finasteride daily is too much and that 1.25mg three days a week is where we should start and then review progress accordingly. Has anybody else heard this.

Sleep - the last few months, my sleep habits have been poor due to over work. Has anybody experienced fluctuating hair growth commensurate with sleep.

    Thanks.

1mg is the standard dose, but the dosage the doctor recommended should be enough. In fact, that's basically the dosage I've been taking with success.

Was the doctor thinking about reducing the likelihood of side effects with that dose?

I have heard of doctors using Finasteride on a alternating basis at several different dosages. One concern is that the half life of the medication is very short and with every other day dosing there might not be a steady dose of the medication in the blood stream.
