I wasn't severely balding yet, but I could see my temples getting more peaked and I had loss on the vertex that was becoming a bit more noticeable over time. At 51, I was still better off than most but I wasn't happy with how I was progressing.
Like many of you here, I did plenty of research and while tempted, I ruled out Propecia/Fin due to the reported sides. There are simply too many people that are reporting this for it to be hysteria, in my opinion - and the risk of being wrong I think is too high.
I then looked into Minoxidil but hesitated due to the reported sides on the skin and apparent aging. But the sides seemed to be reversible if they happened and were not life-changing. So I bought some 5% liquid and got started.
The first thing I noticed was that my eyes were getting puffy in the mornings and people were commenting that I looked tired. So I stopped. But then I restarted again a few months later simply because I was getting worried about my hair loss more and more.
This time, I was a lot more careful about application. I put some Vaseline on my forehead and under by eyes on the cheek bones before applying. I made sure to wash my hand completely afterwards and to let the liquid dry for at least an hour before going to bed. This eliminated the previously mentioned side effects.
I only apply at night and have been doing so for a little over 5 months. I'm completely amazed by the results. My peak is already disappearing and my vertex bald spot is nearly gone. Granted, I already had a lot of hair density to work with as I wasn't really slick bald anywhere. But my thinning wispy cowlick in the front is much thicker and wavier. I used to see some scalp under a bright light - now I see none. As far as I'm concerned, this stuff is a miracle drug.
I hope this helps anyone in their quest for information.
