Severe receded hairline at 19, help please...

So I'm a 19 year old university student, and I'm going pretty bald, pretty fast. I don't understand why I'm balding so early though. Sure my dad is bald-ish as well, but he's almost 50! I'm nineteen, NINETEEN! So I'm considering a hair transplant to restore my hairline, and then just keep the balding behind it in control, or get another transplant in a few years.

Family history of hair loss is a very important consideration. I have a friend whose father has a full head of hair. My friend is a Norwood 6, most likely because his mother's father was extremely bald. How is the hair on your mother's side of the family? Finasteride isn't for everyone. 19 is just too young to get a hair transplant. IMO, you should do everything to keep what you have. Some guys your age will use small doses of finasteride, Rogaine, Nizoral and Nioxin shampoo. It's interesting too that the body's immune system plays a role in hair cycles, so some guys occasionally use corticosteroids like over the counter hydrocortisone 1%. Steroids cause skin thinning so most dermatologists discourage daily use. Many steroids like Cordran SP have a listed side of excessive hair growth. Also many guys with thinning hair, baby their hair. that is one of the worst things you could do. Good blood circulation is very important to healthy hair growth, so massage and brushing are beneficial.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. First off, my grandfather on my mother's side is approaching 70, and I'm more bald than he is. I've recently started using this caffeine shampoo called "Alpecin". Haven't really seen any improvements yet though, but I think it also focuses more and saving what you have left. I'm don't use steroids at all, that I know of. My GP actually recommended Rogaine/Regaine/whatever, but I've read that it isn't really beneficial for a receding hairline, and my crown area is still perfectly hairy. A hair transplant seems like the best bet to rid myself of baldness, but it's expensive, and I doubt that a specialist would even consider recommending the procedure at 19 years old. I don't ask for much in life, but I do ask for hair!

Hair transplants are an option down the road. It's tough when you're young. PRP helps miniaturizing hair and improves hair quality all over. PRP, Rogaine and very small doses of finasteride could hold the hair loss back until you're around 29, which is the age most hair restoration doctors will perform FUE surgery on a man. If you only end up with frontal hair loss, you will be in better shape than the guys who lose it in the back as well. If the donor characteristics are good, there's usually enough hair to restore the frontal area of most men.
