This female patient presented to Dr. Cole with alopecia areata, nearly in totalis. She began experiencing hair loss as an infant and her condition worsened as she grew older and, particularly, when she became pregnant. She had some past success in re-growing hair with Kenalog injections, but her hair loss accelerated seven or eight months before she came to see Dr. Cole.
In February of this year (2010), Dr. Cole administered Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy on this patient. This involved drawing the patient’s blood, which was then placed in a centrifuge to separate out the platelet-rich portion. The platelet rich plasma, rich in a variety of growth factors, was then administered via injections into the scalp. The second set of photos were taken at a follow-up appointment 6 months after her initial PRP treatment. The patient reported that this is the best response that she has ever had to treatment for her alopecia areata, and we are hopeful that we will see further progress in the future.
