Six patients have been selected for this trial and the study will go on for 4 years to see if any of the stem cells will turn cancerous!

So, how does this affect us and why is this in the Tsuji lab thread?

Well, for starters Tsuji lab will need to multiply your stem cells to make "hair germs". The easiest way to produce stem cells atm is by converting skin cells into stem cells! These newly formed stem cells are termed "induced pluripotent stem cells" and have all the characteristics of a stem cell!

So what's stopping us from using it till now?

We've known for sometime that cancer cells go through a very similar process known as 'undifferentiation' which is pretty much a normal cell (e.g. skin cell) turns into a stem cell-like body and then into a cancerous cell (e.g. melanoma).

Since we use a very similar method to produce a stem cell (iPS), we have no idea how safe they are or whether they have the potential to turn cancerous.

If this trial shows high level of safety, you can be more than certain that many trials will follow including those promised by Tsuji lab!
Desmond it's great to see you back here with your positivity man but honestly I think we got our fair share of news in the last 30 days (unexpectedly) and this is what we will have for a while, probably a year unless we get something from Histogen or Aderans.

I know there's a desire to keep the conversation going after all the movement we have seen but IMO there will be very very little for quite a while now as pretty much every company is in some sort of defined path and it will take some time to find out if things will go well for any of them.

Keep up the good spirit and work harder than ever!

        Hey guys,

Here's some interesting news from Japan that will directly impact Tsuji lab and curing hairloss! On 1st of September 2013 (just a few days ago):

        1) Japanese government provided US$1.12 billion to fund research in iPS (Induced pluripotent stem cells)! This funding is 11 times greater than what was being provided to iPS researchers in the US!

        2) Japanese lawmakers will meet one more time this month to conduct a final debate regarding changes in legislation to make the approval process for stem cell therapies much faster than in the United States and United Kingdom. (Very exciting stuff)

Many have said that Japan is trying to reinvent themselves by showing to be progressive and sensible and not inhibitory.

In July, the Japanese Health Ministry gave the go-ahead for the world's first clinical trial on humans using induced pluripotent stem cells made using the Nobel Prize-winning technique of Shinya Yamanaka.

Dr Masayo Takahashi who is leading the first in man study said earlier this month: "I want us, Japan, to dominate the world in the area of therapies using iPS cells. It feels like the government is opening one door after another to help."

These are truly exciting times we live in guys We couldn't have had better news!
