Proscar and Avodart increase risk of prostate cancer according to the FDA

(Reuters) - A class of drugs meant to improve symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland actually increase the chance of getting a more serious form of prostate cancer, health officials said on Thursday.

However, they also said the drugs' benefits outweigh the risks.

I saw this. New England Journal of Medicine has interesting articles on it also. What it actually said was that it had more benefits than risks when treating BPH. So in other words, as far as I understand, risks would outweigh benefits if you're already perfectly healthy with no prostate problems. I'd love to take finasteride to help deal with my hair loss but the risk reward doesn't work for me unfortunately.
