Healing time - taking time off work

Hi Chrisis. Looks really good, been following your blog.

I live in the same area as you and looking at doing the same trip, I was originally thinking Dr Bisanga at the BHR clinic but then after further research think I've decided on Dr Feriduni.

One question, in terms of recovery, how long was it before you could go out after the Ht without anyone knowing. For example if you took time off work how long before you could have gone back with a shaved head but no one knowing you'd had a Ht?

Was thinking taking 2 months unpaid leave in a hope that if I shaved my head right to the bone a few weeks before I went on leave (to get people used to it), in the hope that by the time I went back after the Ht I'd have totally healed but but maybe keep it shaved a month or some once back at work to then just let it grow through as though I was just letting it grow again. Just need frontal work similar to you so was hoping to keep the Ht under wraps. (Other than redding, in which case I'd prob have grow it a bit to cover redness.

Any thoughts or your 1 month post photos would be great.

I think your strategy sounds like it would work.

At 4-6 weeks I've found my native hair growing back, however my recipient still looks bare/patchy and won't produce growth for another month or two yet.

I think if you returned to work after 2 months, you could just keep your hair very short and nobody would be able to tell. I'd recommend buying lots of aloe vera to help calm the redness and use it morning and night. You could pretend you went on holiday and suffered bad sunburn, as others have.

Glad the blog has been useful to you and I will be posting a 6 week update with a new set of photos soon. It was meant to be a 4 week update but my computer died last week so I've had limited access to the internet.

Thanks! Yes, MPB does run in the family I'm afraid.

Yeah, I think your idea is perfectly realistic. Your recipient area may still be a bit pink however, but it's unlikely anyone would put it together. Use lots of aloe vera for the redness. I have been entirely open with my family and friends, yes.

Good to see the photos. Is there some shock loss in the mid scalp area? Or was the thinning there before the HT? How have u been managing the redness in the recipient area? Cant wait for the 4/5 month update!

As a side note, Im 3 weeks away from my HT. There is a possibility I will be on crutches while travelling ( perfect timing ), so I was wondering how much of a walk is it from the Eurostar termination point to the train to Hasselt?

I may have to book a wheelbarrow in advance!

I have noticed the same, with regard to shock loss. I wasn't thinning there prior to treatment, so shock loss may very well be the cause. I'm not worrying about it at this point though!

I managed the redness with aloe vera twice a day (night and day). I've got through about 3 tubes of that stuff haha, worth stocking up.

The walk from the Eurostar to the Hasselt train is not too far if memory serves, but looking back the whole experience is a bit of a blur. I'd say 5 mins or so if I was pushed. How come you're on crutches?

Your 6 weeks photos look good, cheers for uploading. I'd be interested to see your 8 weeks ones when the time comes, that's when I'd be going back to work so be interested to see how the reddening is etc. Might need to take longer off.

Is anyone on here using regaine? I bought a 3 month supply but haven't started it yet after reading all the warnings, scared me a little.

I am going in for an operation to repair some ligaments in my ankle on Tue of next week. Never meant for it to coincide with the trip but I was bumped up to do an unforeseen cancellation in the surgery times - ho hum

Good news if its only a 5 min walk, I can hobble that no probs!

Kipper - ( great name btw ) - Yep I am planning on doing something similar to Chris with regards to the post-op documentation. Will probably start a thread on here as opposed to a blog. Im over for 2 days, 2nd/3rd May so will start posting soon after that. I did all the correspondence online as I was crazy busy and could not get the time off to fly for a personal consultation. However I am going over a day early to meet Dr Feriduni and will discuss any outstanding issues then.

Have you had a consultation yourself yet? When are you thinking of getting the HT?

Not done my online consultation yet. Been a long time slowly researching, monitoring my hair, and deciding on the right Dr etc. Im from the uk same area as Chrisis and initially I realised Dr Farjo was the only decent one in the uk (learnt from this site) then from reading threads on here I found the BHR clinic in Belgium with Dr Bisanga who I set my heart on before finally finding Dr Feriduni also in Belgium. Chrisis thread kind of made my decision more towards Dr Feriduni. Next step is the online consultation.

I'll be interested to see your progress after your ht, as like I've put previously i was going to take time off work unpaid leave to get the ht and possibly do some travelling (once the initial healing is complete) then go back to work with a shaved head or short regrowth (full native regrowth if possible depending on time) and keep it that way for a few months before slowly regrowing back to normal. That's why I'm interested to see the healing times and when the reddening passes.

Tried to stay off meds as long as possible, defiantly don't want to do propceia. I bought some regaine but not started it yet.

Chrisis, have you started regaine? How soon after your ht can you start using it in the receipt area? Have you had any side effects?

Yeah kipper take off 3 weeks and then sick leave and if it totals a month you should be fine. Or go back to work after 2 weeks but you will have to say you got sunburned quite badly.

Chris Im thinking of wearing a homemade baseball hat with a plastic interior ( as to ensure the grafts don't get caught in the fabric ). What do u think?

Im not big on bandana's and I defo want to keep the grafts as safe as possible.

Hey, yeah I started back on the minoxidil after about a month. It's possibly safe sooner than that, but I've erred to caution on most things throughout this process. I've had no (known) side effects from minoxidil.

Hi Jairus, I'm not sure the baseball cap is a good idea. It could be a little too heavy for the area.

I think I was just a little unlucky with my lost graft. I wondered if the reason the graft affixed itself was due to putting the bandana on too early after spaying finastil/vitamin E on the recipient area. Maybe something worth bearing in mind: allow the scalp time to dry before putting anything on it.
