    Seasonal Shedding of Hair transplants

    Seasonal shedding

Shedding is something that guys (and girls) need to be well aware of so that when its your time and it occurs (often seasonally) that you do not panic and start organising your next HT in a desperate attempt to regain your lack of "density".

Shedding unfortunately is part and parcel of the HT "process". Seasonal shedding occurs to us all along with med shedding (if on meds) - I personally experienced a shed recently which left my hair looking very thin and even though i knew it was only a shed it still made me anxious and very self conscious - it does every time - BUT i know through experience it is because of the periodic "shedding process" and that given time it will slowly but surely come back in. Yes a waiting game ...yet again!

When it does occur just park it and ride it out and try your very best like in the early days of your HT to not scrutinise it by watching it, applying products, washing in, conditioning it, washing it again ;-) Important point also when you shed and then it returns..remember for the next time in order to limit the anxiety levels associated with it.

What you must be aware of is that HT 's when they shed do expose the fact that they perform the "art of illusion" as are not dense, not like a "normal" head of hair - but can give the illusion of density with skilled placement performed appropriately with accurate direction and correct use of characteristics. HT's appear thicker than they actually are ..until a dreaded shed.

HT hair is no where near as dense as a "normal" head of hair - therefore when you shed say 25% of it if not more in a "shed cycle" it makes the HT area appear thin in comparison to pre shed. This is when the panic and anxiety sets in - trust me i have experienced many sheds and it unnerves me still most times.

Best advice I can give is just ride it out and be patient (again) and it will all come back in over time - often 3/4 months. Maybe get on MSM if not already just to help things along and also bulk up the regime with a hair vitamin, omega 3 - DO NOT start applying Minoxodil or Nizoral shampoo(if not a regular applier) to boost growth - Big NO NO - It will only shed more ,potentially. The best thing you can do it try forget about it as it will then come back in much quicker if you do - rather than watching / waiting for it.

Switching medical products can also induce a shed like what just happened to me switching to Rogain foam!

does shedding mean that you loose all the HTP hair in cycles? Or is this a situation where the HTP hair just thins slightly for a brief cycle?

When this type of shedding happens, do not think it's time to trash your present medicinal regime. Talk to your doctor first. Some guys drop what they are using and start a new product which can make the present shedding worse!

thanks for writing this Spex its a good post

Guys - so is it the case that every single year we will go through a shed? hair will look thinner for a whole 3-4 months. thats like 1/3 of a year every year?

i didn't know about seasonal shedding until i read this but i remember last year in april/may time i started planning another ht in my head but at the same time thought to myself iv started shedding shit loads and maybe the propecia aint working like it used to so more transplants would have just caused more problems

i was researching more hts again and then july/august ish time i noticed my hair was looking better than ever

12 months later (now) it feels like its looking thin again so im wondering if its a shed rather than further loss? so does that mean it will happen every year in may/june. i should nt plan any holidays or even to get married in the future this time of year etc etc?

we all shed every year without fail?

IMHO, seasonal shedding does not imply that everyone goes through this every year. It's very unpredictable. I think the driving point is to wait it out when it happens. The tendency for us is to change our regimen thinking our current one quick working. That's not the case in most situations.

thanks gillenator for taking the time to reply.

i thought from this post it meant that everyone goes through it once a year around the same time. thanks for clearing it up for me.

its weird, doenst necessarily feel like iv lost more it just feels as if the shines gone. was hoping you guys were going to say its yearly :-(

You're welcome morelocks. I know it's tough to go through it and we all have. I use Toppik when it does happen.

So, the idea is that the transplanted hairs' cycling will be synchronized?

Scalp hair normally remains in anagen for around 3 years. For those of you with any experience of this, is that around the interval between these sheddings?

Didn't think the cycle length was that much set in stone. Definitely provides another hurdle for BHT, besides density.

I know this post is old but will always be relevant. I was wondering about hair cycle of the transplanted hair. Is the cycle get a reset after the initial regrowth or does it resume it's normal cycle from where it was?
