I am currently using Regaine 5% (6 sprays in the morning and the night) and propecia 1mg. The doctor's assistance told me that I can start to cut down on the usage of Regaine after 6 months (to use it once a day only), and gradually can stop using it altogether. So by then, I would be just relying on propecia to retain my hair. Have you heard of anyone who has done this? And does it work?

I was actually thinking to work things the other way round, that is to cut down on propecia gradually before coming to a complete stop of taking it, and to just use Regaine after that.

actually i have been using minoxidil for last 10 yrs but sadly it does not work for me... propecia somehow i am coy in trying. at 32 now and had a kid, i cannot risk the chance of the side effects though it seems quite uncommon?

is HT really the way to go? Been having 2nd thoughts all the time...

This is a phenomenon that occasionally occurs Sadman- called shock loss- and should largely resolve with time. Most likely the hairs that fell out were those that were somewhat delicate, and those that do not regrow were more than likely to fall out anyway over the next year or so, as they were in their final cycle of growth.
Good luck, be patient, take biotin and use the laser light and continue with the minoxidil if Dr. Tan advises you to.

hi sir, i have come across quite a few patients who had really bad transplants which are irreversible ( according to them ). However, i realize most of them had HT like way years ago, prob between 2000-2004. They prob went with the strip method.

Just curious, are bad and irreversible HT common? I mean, the worst we expect is to lose ur transplanted hair + existing hair, though it sounds fair that u said the hair that had been lost under shock loss are likely to fall out in the next yr or so... thanks for the help sir!

Hi Dr. E, thanks for your reply! By the way, I am quitting propecia as the side effect is worsening day by day, even though I have decreased the dosage from 1mg to 0.5mg. However, I would still continue with the minoxidil and wait patiently.

I have read somewhere that quitting propecia would only affect hair that the drug helps to grow, so for my case, it's only about 2 months since I started using it and don't think it has done much in the hair growth yet, hence it shouldn't have any adverse withdrawal symptom, I hope. Sigh... what's most important now is that I want the sides to go away.

              Sadman,

Propecia and Rogaine are the only two hairloss medications approved by the FDA for treating MPB. The difference is that only Proecia addresses the source of the problem which is DHT, Rogaine (minoxidil) does not.

So if you were to drop one of the two, you don't want to drop Propecia (finasteride) if at all possible. I use both products and have for years which gives me the best combined result. The finasteride I take is still inhibiting DHT effectively and the minoxidil (foam version) still promotes the highest degreee of hair caliber I could attain in my crown.

If you stop Propecia, you definitely will continue to lose your native hair that is receptive to DHT.
