Default Help! Am I losing my transplant hair?

Hi Guys - I was wondering if you may share your wisdom with me. I had 4400 grafts done 9 months ago and the results are fantastic but I notice every time I brush my hair over the sink about 6 or 7 hairs land in the sink and reckon this shedding happens every time I play around with my hair. Some may be coming from non-transplant area but some definitely are.

    THE QUESTIONS ARE:
    • Is this normal shedding?
    • If you lose hair from the transplant area do they grow back because the graft contains the root as well as the hair?
    • or am I losing all my lovely new hair?

Any advice would be amazing! I am using Rogaine 5% every morning and night and taking 1mg Finasteride every day too.

    thank you

    Pro

Thanks Spex, as always you are the fountain of knowledge. I just read your article and feel better about it. I thought once the hair had left the head that was it but good to know they will grow back.

cheers mate, I can now enjoy the glorious London summer without this worry.

Did you have any native (original) hair in the transplanted area? If you had any left you might be losing those. I had 4 HTs totalling more than 4000 grafts in the frontal area and I continued to thin and I had a massive shed over a year ago that made the area look much thinner. I had a lot of original hair when I started my HTs and to be honest I can't figure out -neither can my doctor- if what I lost was transplanted hair or native. It could be both though. For 4000 grafts my hair line should be much thicker than what it is now. I feel like I did lose transplanted hair along with the native.

I don't want to scare you but LOSING TRANSPLANTED HAIR PERMANENTLY IS A REAL PROBLEM that has happened to a minority of HT patients and I feel I'm one of them. Search the net -like I did- and you'll see. I found out about this horrible truth after my 4th HT and I was completely devastated. That massive shed I had about 16 months ago caused me -indirectly- some permanent nerve damage as the amount of stress I was going through because of the fear that I was going to lose all my transplanted hair was too much for me.

I hope what you're losing isn't transplanted hair or at least if you're losing those ones it's just the normal daily shedding and will be replaced by new ones.

Two things: I have noticed that my transplanted hairs are much easier to come out with a slight pull. Also, I never experienced "seasonal shedding". What I would experience is a sudden shed that hits and leaves me thinner permanently.

Default Losing Transplant Hair / Shedding

    My replies below:

    "Is this normal shedding?"

Shedding is not "normal" but signifies increased hair loss. Most likely
the shedding is from your original hairs in the area.
If you lose hair from the transplant area do they grow back

"If you lose hair from the transplant area do they grow back because the graft contains the root as well as the hair?"

    Yes, that is correct.

"or am I losing all my lovely new hair?"

Using Propecia is important, and you may wish to also add laser light
therapy that may help further slow down hair loss.
