Default Can MPB start as general thinning without receding?

I ask this question because although I have MPB, my hair loss has been strange. When I was 16 I noticed general thinning throughout the top of my head. I recognized it because I could see more scalp. However, I did not have any recision in the temple area.

It wasn't until I turned about 24 that my temples started receding but I still had a solid hairline. I would say it would have been equivalent to a NW2.

However, now at 28 I'm probably close to a NW3. My hair has definitely continued thinning but I still don't have a bald spot.

It seems like my balding has been backwards of the normal trend of receding hairline first.

I'll never be able to prove it was accutane, but I believe that is what thinning my hair and the receding happened naturally over time.

I'm not an expert no less but I'd say yes it's possible, as you say it's not common but still MPB. I always had my mom's side hair type, all my mom's brothers always had a head more than full of hair and so did I until 32yo, I never thought I was going to be bald, but then it happened just 2 years ago and maybe something like you I never saw a lot of hair falling but month after month I saw my hair thinning without stop, first it eas just the left side, then the middle and then the the right. Now I have all of my hair completely different that it was before, the texture is other and feel like I'm a different person, but I've gone to 3 HT specialists and all of them said it's genetic alopecia.

Isn't that what diffuse thinning is?

Some people on this site think I have diffuse thinning, but I have MPB. My hair loss started with a receding hairline, then it started going thin in the back, then it thinned out in a horse shoe pattern, and now finasteride has kept it from going any further.

Thing is, my crown has not yet been affected. It started with the top of my head in front of the crown but behind the hair line. Then 6 years later my temples started to recede and now 3 years after that my hairline started to recede.

I still have just as much hair in the back and sides as I always did, it's the top that is thin. My crown is good. Now the hairline is receding too.

Hair loss can follow all sorts of different patterns. As has already been mentioned, the type of pattern you're describing is called a diffuse pattern.

Sometimes hair loss can begin with recession at the front with a diffuse pattern forming later, or sometimes the diffuse pattern comes first. Some people experience diffuse thinning without ever actually having any recession at the front.

In other words, there's nothing unusual about what you're describing.

As a diffuse thinner myself i'd call this as diffuse thinning and quite normal, the only (i say only!!?) problem we DTs have is there's no Norwood type scale out there as far as i'm aware, that we can put ourselves in.

I can't calculate, then say where i am on the Norwood scale as the scale doesn't quite resemble what i'm going through!

Norwood is dated now, somone should update it and retitle it themselves, i'm sure if and when a company like Replicel etc comes out, they'll do this very thing, it's another way of concuring (and rebranding if that's possible) the hairloss world.

Is it true that Diffuse Thinners have a better chance at regrowth than classic MPB'ers? I read in many sites that DT's are very good responders to finasteride, better than the MPB'ers.

Are you on fin, and have you gotten good results?

I have MPB and finasteride has done nothing special for me, just halt my hair loss with no side effects which is okay. But i'm stuck at looking like this. Thought fin would regrow lots of hairs, it has only probably regrown a few, not enough to make a cosmetic diff.

I am on fin yes and the most it's done is stabilise/slow down the loss impo.

Now, and i don't mean to be brutal but, you say you expected regrowth of lots of hairs, are you sure that's what ou presumed? you've made over 500 posts yet you put forward a sentence like that!

I don't think there's been many (if any) instances where fin has regrown lots of hair, juat reports of the slowing down of hairloss, so you would hav been the first.

And cosmetically, you have the concealers.
