I agree with Tracy C . The degree of unqualified speculation is amazing. The fact is there is a huge amount of effort by many going in to creating better solutions .

Reasonably better treatment available in 3-5 years? Probably.
Cure in 5 years? No freaking way.

True cure would be gene therapy which is perfect to treat "defects" like baldness and EXTREMELY PROFITABLE so I have no idea why they haven't pursued it yet.... It seems that science does not operate in a capitalistic way

finding a cure at a genetic level is definitely possible...yet very little progress has been made "officially"
you better believe there are darker forces at work here...

of course.... find 1000 people who started balding early and find 1000 alec baldwin types who will never go bald. Compare their genetics and find the differences....

And then try to figure out which one of the quadrillions of possible different permutations of genetic combinations is responsible for MPB. Piece of cake.

find genes that exists on 100% of people with MPB and don't exist on 100% of people with no MPB. If you were to test hundreds of thousands of people, you would narrow the number of genes down to a dozen or so...

It doesn't work that way. Characteristics such as hair type/growth/loss are affected by combinations of genes, not a single gene. You can't simply compare a bunch of balding and non-balding people looking for individual genes present in one group but not the other; you have to weed through a practically infinite number of possible genetic combinations. Many of the genes responsible for whatever combination results in MPB are likely present in both MPB and non-MPB individuals.
