    Default Thinning hair at 47YO

I'm 49 now, but started to notice my hair loss two years ago. I have a very small spot at the back of my head and I have noticed the hairline is receding a little. I went to a dermatologist a year ago and he gave me a prescription shampoo. It didn't really help at all. I was actually counting the hairs in the shower and in my brush and was losing about 75 to 100+ during my showers. Yeah, I know, I'm crazy!! =) My head was becoming itchy and I was getting zits or ingrown hairs on my head also. Also getting a lot of body acne and some on my forehead and face. It has slowed some now. I'm losing about half of what I was 2 years ago. But I do see what looks like my whole head thinning. Right now as I type this, my head is VERY itchy.. I don't really notice dandruff and flakes, but when I itch my head I get a lot of crap under my nails. I asked a few people that have lost hair and they said they didn't have what I have. No real itchy scalp of zits.. I went to the dermatologist again a few months ago and he looked at my head and did a pull test and said it's not bad, but he thought it was MPB.. I want to go to another doctor and a ISHRS Physician next. At 49YO I still like to do the wild thing with the wife, so I don't want to take a chance on the Fin.. The dermatologist I went to was using it and he said the side effects are true for him. So, the wife still looks hot for her age (49) and still likes to have fun so I gotta stay away from the Fin.. Anyone else on here with hair loss have the same things as me?

I am 37 years old and still do the wild thing with the wife, despite being on FIN for 2 years full dose, it has halted my hairloss and I have had no sexual side effects besides some watery semen and a bit sensitive testicles in the beginning . If you want to do something about your hairloss - I would start with 1/4 doses of FIN and try it out for a month, if you get sides - go off and you will not suffer anything. If you do not have any problems - increase the dose to 1/2 dose after a month and take a look etc... It will with high probability halt your hairloss and the risk of sides is still limited.

For your questions on what else to do - only Rogaine and FIN have really proven effects, Nizoral shampoo might help a bit on the itch and to keep the scalp clean - any other regimens are more or less useless.

Alternatively - shave down to a grade 3 with a clipper and be a shaven cool guy who do the wild thing with the wife :-)

Well what I'm looking to find out is if anyone else gets a real itchy scalp and zits on their scalp. If I had MPB, would I get the itchy scalp and zits and do most people get that with MPB? Or does the hair just fall out?

I tried the shampoo, 2% prescription, and it did nothing..

I can also run my fingers through my hair at just above the base of my neck and by squeezing my fingers together I get a lot of hairs out. Seems like I'm loosing hair all over. May not even have a good donor area. But gotta see a specialist to find out.

I also have an allergy to something and have Chronic Rhinitis and Post-Nasal Drip real bad the last couple of years and was wondering if I could be losing hair from an allergy. I've had both problems almost as long. Nasal first.. Also getting respiratory problems.. Just a though, or wishful thinking..

Went through the same thing only mine started at 36-37 rather than 47. Just as soon as my crown started thinning , the itching and rashes started and got really really bad. Minox only made the itching worse but I did find one weird thing about it: The itching was always the strongest where the mpb was headed next- which most of the time was sides and bottom of my crown area.
If yours has slowed down that it good because when I had that itch, my mpb was very rapid and Minox couldn't stop it . Hate to say it but Fin is the only thing that could stop my fast growing crown. It stopped the itch and the rashes as well. Had wonderful results- not only did my crown shrink in half, my teen hair line started coming back as well. Hair that had been gone for 20 years was coming back. But after about 2 years I started having some really bad sides so I had to go off of it. The weird thing is after I stopped I did a bad shed but then after about a year 50-60% of my Fin hair came back. My MPB had greatly slowed and eventually stopped to the point I got off the minox. My fin sides started getting better but after a few years started coming back. At that point it may have been other factors as well but I was getting sick and it kept getting worse. Went to my Dr and got some help and they put me on a low dosage of Test and now I feel great again. But now it looks like my MPB has started up again and I am back on Minox which for the moment is slowing it down but probably not going to stop it. I still have some of my old Fin and thought about trying a very small amount-just enough to stop the process. But I really don't want to chance of getting sides and feeling like a sick old man again. The low dose of test has fixed me -maybe too good as I now have relentless urges of an 18 year old boy I am 47 btw and look around you will see many guys our age that have mild to moderate signs of mpb. I do not think it is much of a stigma to have it at our age.
With a spot in the back and recession, I would really think it's mpb . Good luck!

Well I may be lucky at 49, but would like to continue to be lucky till I die.. I've been studying Donald Trumps style. The double comb over with a twist. Got a diagram on how to do it.. LOL

OK, Folks. So it's been almost 7 years since I posted this here. Since then I've continued to lose some hair. In front my hair line receded about an inch or so in the middle, or should I say above the nose? I can see it's a lot thinner at the middle part and can easily see up my scalp now when I look in the mirror. When it gets to the sides or temple area it receded maybe 2 inches or more. The way I wear my hair it's not all that noticeable just yet. The back had a small spot like the size of a nickel. Now it's much bigger. I'm not taking anything right now, nor have I ever, but I started to go to a local hair clinic here and joined a "hair study" I'm pretty sure it's probably a scam, but I figured what the heck.. In the study I got a laser cap, emu oil shampoo and conditioner, and some supplements. I started in early December and to date the only thing I'm noticing is that it's not falling out nearly as much as it was. Doesn't mean that what I'm doing is causing it. Through the years this is kinda how it's gone, just not as little hair falling out like now. Anyways, I'm now 56YO and still have a heck of a lot of hair. Got like another few months of this study. Not sure I want to continue it though. I kinda want to start taking Finasteride. Gonna try and upload a couple of pics. Just though I'd post an update to this old post and see what you all think.

Let me add that the reason for this update was that I'm looking for some input on this so called "hair study" I'm in. Anyone else do a similar "hair study?" What's your take on the laser cap? The shampoo and conditioner? Come on, jump in folks..
