Locks of Love and St. Baldrick’s Foundation organized a head-shaving drive at St. John’s University in Jamaica, Queens, on Thursday to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

Friends of Tiffany Marmol scream and cry as she shaves her head for charity.

Never has a bad hair day felt so good for the soul.

Dozens of St. John’s University faculty, staff and students bid farewell to their luscious locks on Thursday in a show of solidarity for juvenile cancer patients.

The event, a joint effort by St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Locks of Love, drew cheers and tears from the packed crowd inside the school’s D’Angelo Center as participants got their hair cut by professional stylists.

“I’m so scared about what it’s going to look like,” Tiffany Marmol, a mathematical physics major junior, said minutes before shaving off roughly 17 inches of straight, jet-black hair, leaving her with a boot camp-style buzz cut.

Tiffany Marmol cries as she gets her head shaved for charity, here with her dad Felix, left.

Marmol said she was showing her support for the children of two family friends recently diagnosed with cancer. She bought hundreds of dollars worth of clothes and earrings to remain looking “as feminine as possible,” she said, and convinced her father, Felix, to get his head shaved as well.

Felix Marmol, 39, was a little less apprehensive.

“Nothing new for me,” he said. “I’m here for her,” he added, gesturing toward his daughter.

Some of the participants were not losing their manes for the first time.

John Flynn, the university’s director of student conduct, was partaking in his second consecutive year of charity-driven buzz cuts.

“This is all about having fun while doing something good for someone else,” said Flynn, who pledged his support on behalf of a friend whose daughter has been diagnosed with leukemia.

The event, now in its third year, raised over $22,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, said foundation Chairman John Bender. The event also raises money through charity food sales and raffles.

Participants hope to raise awareness of childhood cancer by shaving their locks.

Bender, who is also the president and CEO of Allied Reinsurance, said he decided to start the foundation in the summer of 1999 while on a golf outing with two of his co-workers and closest friends.

“We started thinking about it, and each of us had grown up knowing someone who had died of cancer,” said Bender.

The following St. Patrick’s Day, they turned their company party into a charity shaving event, and raised over $104,000. St. Baldrick’s has since raised over $135 million by shaving more than 220,000 heads at 5,300 events worldwide.

“You’ve got to love the energy that gets around it,” the event’s volunteer coordinator Angela Seegel screamed over the boisterous crowd. “Everybody gets into it.”
