HT questions UK

Hi i was wondering if anyone in the UK could name any clinics/ surgeons that are good for HT. I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough guide on costs (i understand a lot of people dont like to discuss this).

Anyone who has had one, does it look realistic? if so how realistic?

And how come everyone i have seen pictures of who has had it done doesnt have a fringe that comes down. Howcome it is always stuck up at the front? Is this simply just to show it off or do they grow as if you have a cowslick/carflick?

I understand these questions may seem stupid but would be great if someone could help me out.

Not many people would recommend a HT in the UK. Although i've read that Dr. Cole is setting up a practise in London this year, which is exciting as i live here and he is probably one of the most renowned HT surgeons in the world.

There's a couple of well recommended HT surgeons in Brussels and of course, there's plenty in the US. I believe 5 euros a graft (for FUE) is normal cost in europe (Brussels). If you have the time and money, i don't think you can go wrong with Dr. Feller (NYC) or Dr. Cole (Atlanta). I believe $10 per graft is what Dr. Feller charges for FUE, but it's worth the extra money in my opinion. Not sure what Dr. Cole charges.

HT can definitely look realistic if you go to a good surgeon and you have good growth. Obviously, the hairline needs to be densely packed, which takes a lot of grafts and again, GOOD GROWTH !!

Not sure about your 'cowlick' question, but i'm pretty sure you can wear the hairstyle anyway you want.

The transplanted hairs are normally there for life, but there are rare cases where the transplanted hairs become victims of DHT. Just search for some posts on this forum by a member called 'VictimofDHT' (Ah, that's where the name came from). That poor guy has been losing transplanted hairs.

Be carefull about HT mate. I rushed into one last year and it ruined my 2011, as i had no growth and lost loads of native hairs due to the surgery. Do lots of research !!!

Thankyou very much for your reply. Unfortunetly i wont be able to afford a trip to the US, i doubt i will be able to afford one in the uk for a while. I will keep an eye out for Dr.Cole.

Thats really interesting. Do you know if Dr Cole will be performing HT's in the UK or will it just be a London office to book procedures an all work will be in Atlanta?

Unfortunately mate, you're gonna find it difficult finding a doc/clinic who isn't trying to sell you something. Don't go to a HT clinic right now. To be honest, your best bet is to see a dermatologist who knows about HT. I see a guy called Dr. David Fenton from Harley street, but he charges £300 for a first consultation, but he's BUPA registered if you have cover (which i do). He specialises in hair and is very well educated on hair transplants and medications. He will give you an honest opinion on what you should do. I hope you're taking propecia/rogaine ? If you want to send me some pics, i'll give you my opinion...not that i'm an expert, but it's free :-).

Adam, it looks like Dr. Cole will be setting up an actual HT clinic in London, with HDC. The following is from his website.

"Dr. Cole and HDC will soon open a hair restoration surgery clinic in London, England. The planned opening date is in January 2012. The clinic will focus chiefly on FUE. Dr. Cole plans to offer CIT and C2G FUE at this clinic when it opens. They expect the clinic to be quite busy as there is a need for high quality FUE hair transplant surgery in the UK. Dr. Cole and HDC currently have many patients from the UK. Stay tuned for details on this exciting development."

However, i contacted Dr.Cole's clinic a month ago and from what i gathered, i don't think the January timeline is realistic. Might be another few months, but still....great news for us in the UK.

Misreable, a lightbulb just went off in my head. Are you 'misreable' because of your hair loss ? I would never advocate people getting into debt, but if your hair loss bothers you to the extent where it interferes with your life (not going out and stuff), get an interest free credit card to pay for your HT. I had a small taste of what it's like to be misreable/depressed and become totally recluse. I didn't go out socially for almost 7 months at one point. Life's too short to be misreable, expecially if you can solve your problem. But make sure your hair loss in under control through meds before you get a HT.

That's my 2 cents brah.....I'm not saying you should get into debt, but if it'll turn your life aroud..... :-)

Hi Folly thankyou very much for your reply. And thank you for the recomendations. I never realised dermatologists were so expensive. I asked my doctor the other day about seeing a dermatologist but he wouldnt refere me. He didnt think it was important enough!

I don't know if i am bupa covered (do you know how i would find out?)so i guess i will have to get saving.

Propecia scares me, this is why i plan to speak to a dermatologist before i would touch the stuff. I want to get regaine but even still i am a bit weary of using anything without professional advice. All i have used so far is Alpecin shampoo and the liquid you put on afterwards but hasnt seemed to anything too great. Infact im paranoid that the liquid is making it worse one side of my hairline.

I will send you some pics if you don't mind? It will be sometime in the week....is it possible to do it on a private message?

Thats great news (providing Dr Cole is performing the procedure). It would be so much easier to have a HT in London :-) Though a trip to Belguim or the States isn't the end of the world.

You can find a much cheaper dermatologist in London too, but i don't really know any, so you'll have to research yourself. You might be BUPA covered through your job, or you can get private cover for around 50 pounds a month. Works out cheap if you see a lot of different specialist throughout the year.

I was worried about propecia for a very long time too, but i've been taking it for 5 weeks now. Not seeing any of the side effects i was worried about, but i am having real difficulty sleeping for the past 2 weeks. Not slept more than 4 hours a night for the past 2 weeks. Not sure if that's stress though, as i've not read about any sleep related issues caused by propecia. Trust me, you need to do everything in your power to keep you existing hair. HT results will never come close to the density and quality of real hair. You need to stop/slow down your hair loss immediately. Beware with treatment such as regaine/propecia though, as you may shed A LOT of hair to begin with, but it has to be done. I sure did with regaine. I lost most of my hairline after 2 months on it, but it did grow back.

You can add your pics to this post, just cut your face out of the pics. At least then you can get some advice from other people too.
