Can I do anything now to stop temple recession before it starts?

Hi Guys,

I know there are heaps of people on this forum with much worse problems then what I am going to ask so I apologise for that in advance, but I would really appreciate if you could answer my questions.

I’m 27 going on 28 and have a ‘mature’ hairline that recedes at temples like most other guys my age. I have had this hairline for as long as I can remember and haven’t noticed any more recession as yet.

However my father who is 69 and older brother 47 both have definite receding hairlines. The picture below is a very flattering one of my brother when he was 45 (It normally looks worse). My father has receded a fair amount more than this again.

Neither of them have any thinning at the crown just the hairline.

Unfortunately I feel that most likely the same thing will happen to me and I am just wondering while I still have pretty much a full head of hair is there any preventive action I could take now before I actually start losing it? Is it crazy to consider things like Propecia and Rogaine before you actually start losing hair to prevent any hair loss at the temples?

My advice to you is to buy a year's supply of Kirkland 5% Minoxidil from amazon.com, since it's so inexpensive. Even if you don't end up using it, it's worth it having that peace of mind knowing that the minute your hairline gets beyond where you're comfortable with it receding, you can start with topical treatment. I myself just turned 28, am a Norwood 2, and have been on this treatment for 2 months today. Knowing how you respond to Minoxidil is the first step.

Since you're either a Norwood 1 or 2, and you have reason to believe there will be no thinning or bald spot on the crown, do not start Propecia, but do start researching the benefits/drawbacks of Propecia so you can make an informed decision if in fact you do experience non-temple hair loss. Similarly, you can start researching hair transplant techniques and surgeons in case you decide to go down that road in the future, but given your age and progression, a hair transplant is out of the question for you at the moment.
