Propecia - Diary of Progress
Hi all,
I've noticed on these threads that there always seems to be a lot of negatives with people taking propecia and i was fully aware of this before I started taking it. So I thought I would shed some light especially for those who are considering taking the drug. I'm going to keep a diary of my progress on here from now on.
I am 25 years old and started thinning quite a bit on the top scalp region. Since I was 21 my hair went to a Norwood Scale 3. I started on propecia exactly 9 weeks today. The first month didn't seem to be any different which I expected. But after 9 weeks I've definitely noticed that my hair has gotten thicker and I'm confident that I have noticed hair growth already on the top of the scalp area. Sometimes i still get the feeling that MAYBE it is all in my head, because I've read so many cases where people don't notice even the slightest of results untill at leat 6 months in. But every week I've noticed subtle differences and I'm sure by now, they're adding up. Today I even noticed that near the hairline, there seems to be extra hairs that I don't remember being there before.
I wouldn't say there is a big different compared to before I started, but one thing is for sure that where I am thinning is getting less visible. Over the last 5 weeks I did notice an increase in shedding, but it was nothing drastic and I don't seem to be losing hair from this. It's as if the shedded hair is growing in thicker. Anyways for now things are looking good and I have also had NO SIDE EFFECTS whatsoever and I think if i was going to get any, I would have gotten them well by now. I will keep you all posted. It would be interesting to know from any people who are also noticing slight changes after 2 months. Thanks.

3 and a half months gone
Just to let everyone know, that I went to the farjo medical centre and spoke to a patient advisor. Got some really good feedback and was told that I wouldn't need surgery if i carry on taking the medication. They also never charged me £75 for the initial consultation, something to do with my age and hair loss. Always good to know they are not trying to take any money.
It's been 3 and a half months and I've noticed that I hardly shed any hair at all now and my hair is definitely looking thicker, but i still wouldn't say there is a BIG change yet. But then again I haven't lost any more either. And still no side effects so looking good. Will keep updating.

Hi Spex, just a quick question. When you say results may not be seen from between 8-12 months, what exactly do you mean by results.
The benefits of Fin are not as obvious as Minox in that it's rare that significant visible regrowth occurs.
So do you mean that once you start using Fin, you should expect to continue to experience visible hairloss for the first 8 months? Or do you mean that for the lucky few who experience regrowth or thicker hair should expect to see this by 8-12 months?
If hairloss is slowing down or ceasing from the moment you start Fin, then I'm not sure that someone would react at 8-12 months and say 'Oh it's working'. It seems that the results are too subtle to come to a realisation like that. Whereas with Minox (if it works for you) you can say unequivocally that tangible results are experienced within a few months.

Srtcy, I have had very similar effects of proscar/propecia, after 1-2 months my usual shedding was gone and after 4-5 months my crown was starting to fill in, after 8 months time I could see a noticeable difference in my hair looking thicker and my crown was good. My crown had the year before lost probably 40-60% of the density, and I did not like to see pictures from behind. Now I am looking almost as when I was in my twenties from behind.
Unfortunately the hairline do normally not see much growth, and it has been the same for me still a NW3 but at least I know that is had completely halted my hair loss hopefully for many years to come. I had no side effects except watery semen.
Stay patient and you will probably as a minimum see your hair thicken and remaining as is - not everyone has re-growth.
Good luck.

Been on Fin for 2 weeks now, no sides so far, have seen an increase in shed but that's normal at this stage.

This is why taking photos every two months is such a good idea. When doing photo documentation, you want to keep everything as much the same as possible. Use the same background, the same lighting and the same poses. Wear the same top and maintain the same hairstyle and length.

“Results” would be no further hair loss. If you’re your hair loss continues after using the medication properly for a year, you are not getting results.

5 and a half months gone
5 months gone already and to be completely honest I can't see much difference since my last post in terms of hair thickening. My hair looks the same as it did a couple of months ago. Even though it would be nice to have seen more thickness, it's still all good because it means that so far i haven't lost any more hair since I started.
There's still hardly any shedding now although a few weeks back it did increase a bit but only for a week or so. Overall, still looking good! And No side effects. Will keep you posted and let you know when I have grown an afro (just jokin).
