Default Topical Spironolactone does it really block dht?

I can't take the side effects of Propecia so I'm looking for an alternative. I've been reading good things about topical spiro creme. It comes in 2% and 5% versions. I heard it smells really bad but blocks the dht in hair receptor sites. Has anyone tried this?
