Medication
Hello,
I see that there is discussion about medication in conjunction with hair transplant surgery but I cant find a thread with more information about what the medication is, how is it taken and for how long post op.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Dr Representative
The only meds that get taken in conjunction with a HT are meds to help prevent against further loss of native hair. You do not need take meds to help HT hair, just the native hair which is open to attack via dht.
Hairloss is progresive - therefore the more hair you can help prevent from falling out the better as in turn it will result in fewer Ht's
These meds are generally, Propecia, Minoxidil - read up here on info about the Big 3

Hope this helps.

There seems to be a long list of side effects with propecia so that I would not be too happy to take that medication and I definitely would not want to take it for years.
Would I see much of a difference post op with propecia?
I will use rogaine and nizoral.
Mainly I was asking was there any medication I will be prescribed after the operation?

Irish,
A much smaller percent of men have trouble with side effects. You'll never know unless you try, and even then some docs may cut back the frequency of taking Propecia should you notice any side-effects.
Other than minoxidil, there is nothing else as effective as finasteride in slowing down the progression of MPB.
So most docs do not prescribe anything post-op for slowing down the progression of genetic hairloss (MPB) other than Propecia.

I decided against propecia - just not worth the risk, google propecia help forums, after you've read the posts on there you wont take it I guarantee you.
Even Merck admit there are risks for permanent sexual dysfunction.

Thats what I was thinking.
Alternatively for me a better option would be to get additional grafts as needed if that would be a viable plan?
Going by the older male members of my family the sides and back retain thick hair and would hopefully provide a sufficient donor area going forward.
