Wearing a wig for 20 years. Want to stop wearing one but scared.

I have been wearing a hair piece since i was 26. I am now 46 married with 2 boys. My older son knows that my hair is different but I have never opened up to him. Those with kids, how do you let them know? I also wish I can simply stop wearing one and clean shave the head but am nervous on how I would look in front of friends, family, and co-workers. Do you or anyone you know stopped wearing one? What would be the best approach to do this?
