I am assuming the chalky look is similar to dermmatch. Is it smarter to buy a darker shade? or even just to get black? Since black might look less chalky since its darker?
Opinions?

Definetly worth a try. Most patients become really good at using these types of products. Some even use combinations from different companies. You will be a pro before you know it.

Never used dermatch so I don't have a basis for comparison.
I have darker brown hair and I bought the dark brown. It only looks chalky when too much gets put into one place. You learn very quickly not to apply it too liberally.
Best technique is to apply a bit and then smooth it through your hair with your hand/fingers.
I don't think color makes a difference, just quantity.

I bought both dark brown and black.
Will let you guys know once I get them.
I don't have diffuse thinning but I hope it makes my hair look better lol

Yeah...
I've heard of people mixing the colors. I have a bit of white/grey showing up on the sides and on top. In an interesting way, the dark brown nanogen fibers do make my hair look darker and thicker, hence younger. I've read of people mixing the grey/white with the dark brown to keep their salt/pepper looks.
You'll find the application is pretty easy with some practice. Find some hair spray at the local store. You'll be good to go.

Can it be used without hair spray?

Can it be used without hairspray? I guess it probably could, but there will be nothing to hold the fibers onto your existing hair.
The packaging says they electrostatically cling to your existing hair. I don't know about that.
I was apprehensive about using hairspray, but there are some very light ones out there. Trust me, I didn't want the beehive, hair sprayed look or the Aquanet look from 1980's hair metal bands, but I do use hair spray when I use Nanogen.
Just enough to hold things in place...

Just another question. Is there any evidence to suggest these fibres are bad for the hair/scalp? Mighten they harm the growth of our precious few real hairs?

doubt it since its the same stuff kinda

Nanofibers are chopped up bits of keratin, the same substance that makes up normal hair fibers. Been using for 3 months now and no adverse effects, except for realizing just how much hair you've lost.
