    Dermatologist advise on Dutasteride dosing

    Hey guys,

I've been on finasteride 1mg daily for about 4 years. Worked really well (my hair loss went almost to zero, and it visibly improved my hair). I'm around Norwood 2 or 3 and 25 years old. I go to a dermatology/trichology clinic that specialises in hair loss, who prescribes it.

Since about a year, my hair loss has drastically been getting worse and my hair is receding. My dermatologist thinks the finasteride stopped working. He said they see it happening a lot of times (after anywhere from 1 till 15 years of use). He says a possible explanation for it is that the body starts compensating for the DHT inhibition and it possibly starts producing more type 1 5ar (cause I'm blocking a lot of type 2).

He advised me to start using dutasteride, to inhibit both type 1 and type 2 and overall get better results. In that clinic they prescribe 0.15 mg dutasteride daily. They say that amount is enough to treat hair loss effectively and it decreases the chances of side effects or an effect on the size of my prostate. They work with a specific pharmacy that's making the pills with this specific (lower) dose. They do not want to prescribe 0.5mg Avodart daily because that is used for prostate problems. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this?

My second question: The 0.15mg pills are a lot more expensive than taking 0.5mg Avodart. I've been thinking of taking 1 pill of Avodart every 3 days to get to the same result as taking 0.15mg pills daily. I was wondering if you guys know if there is any possible difference in the effectiveness there. Given the long halflife of dutasteride my dermatologist thought it may be similar, but he cannot garantee it and is unsure about it, because there's a big peak in the blood value after taking a 0.5mg pill. He's afraid it might not be as effective.

Would love to know your thoughts guys

I think this dermatologist want's to make money on you if this 0.15 mg dutasteride is much more expensive. Yea 0.15 mg dutasteride might work but there is no proof that is work better than 1 mg finasteride. What we know is that 0.5 mg dutasteride works better than 1 mg finasteride with the same chance of having side effects. You can take 0.5 mg every 3 day instead of 0.15 mg because dutasteride have long half time but maybe you should find another dermatologist that want to prescribe it(search on internet).
