Default 24yr old male, on propecia for 3 1/2-4 1/2 months, thinning rapidly

    Hi all,

I'm a 24 year old male and over the past eight months ive noticed my hair is thinning rapidly. More specifically it is going through miniturization very rapidly. When I look at some of the hairs falling out recently they are pretty thick at the tips but very thin at the roots.

My hair is maybe 2 inches long or so give or take a bit.

For a while I had been using minodoxil 2% off and on, but only at nighttime for maybe a year to six months? This would be somewhat infrequent though.

I'm on propecia now for about my 4th months (possibly coming close to fifth month) but i am still noticing some shedding. but havnt noticed any regrowth of any kind.

I guess my main question is, could my scalp be more sensitive to dht now that ive used minodoxil for a while and stopped it completely? i stopped it around the eight months or so ago.

Wouldnt propecia have stopped further miniturization of hair shafts that were already starting miniturization? im still seeing hair shafts shrink more and more each month or so i go to get my hair cut.

this is really frustrating. my hair was reasonably thick about eight months ago. now it's getting very very thin.

Stopping minoxidil might have set you back a little, since most people can shed for several months after they discontinue using the product. It can take up to a year to see results from Propecia, but your shedding should slow down before that point. It’s really early to tell anything yet. Just be patient, Propecia works for most people to some degree.

The other searing question that burns into me day and night...

do i tell my girlfriend of around 8 months that i am going bald and that i am on propecia, etc, etc? all signs point to that she deeply cares for me but i am so afraid of what will happen if i tell her what is happening to me. i know most will say "if she wont accept it or cant live with you the way you are, then she is not worth it" but the problem is that i think the vast majority of young women out there would jump ship or rather be with someone with a full head of hair. this makes me so depressed sometimes.

not knowing what will happen. i deeply care for her and love her but i dont know what i should do about it. im afraid of how she will react and if she will start withdrawing away from me.

Yea sure, she should be able to like you for who you are. And she probably wont mind. Girls don't care as much for looks as boys do.
Just act like it dont bother you that much when you tell her. If it bothers you, then it will bother her.

I agree with Jewil; hair loss is not something you should feel ashamed about. It's obviously very difficult to deal with, but it's something natural that most men experience in their lifetime, and not something you should feel compelled to hide. Try not to make a big deal out of it and, more than likely, she won't see it as a big deal.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem. I know for minoxidil or Rogaine to have a chance at being effective, you have to use it twice daily for several months. If you were only using it sporadically and stopped using it all together 8 months ago, I doubt rogaine is contributing to your problem. Propecia works to maintain the hair you already have. It doesn't regrow hair from areas that has already been lost. I would recommend staying on this medication to maintain your hair as long as you are tolerating the medication well. Have you had your hair loss evaluated by a specialist, such as a dermatologist or hair restoration surgeon? If not, I would highly advise this. A doctor would be able to perform a hair analysis and haircheck. These would be important in monitoring your hair loss over time. Best of luck to you.

This is a very good question. It has nothing to do with the age of the thread.

Minoxidil will NOT cause hair to fall out quicker. It only helps half of the men who take it.

For one third of men, it will retard hairline recession.

That said, it's not as good as anti androgens. It all depends what someone wants to do with
their hair. It's a personal choice.

And some guys can accept baldness better than others. I'm not one of them, but it's not
    a bad option.
