Should I try Rogaine? Does it really work?

My crown has been thinning for years now. If I start Rogaine will it potentially help me regrow some hair there that was lost from the last few years, or will it only help with hair that was lost in the last few months?

It's a big commitment to start and I'm curious if anyone on here has had worthwhile success with it.
