Why can't a 20 year old have a hair transplant?
I am a 20 year old who has been losing his hair since I was 17 - in fact from 16 my hair was very thin. I think I'm fully developed (been able to grow a full beard since I was 14 for goodness sake)! For two years I have been using minoxidil morning and night in order to hold on to my hair. I am now 20 and my receding hairline has reached breaking point. I need a solution - and the only thing I think will work is a hair transplant!
Why then do the top surgeons refuse to do it? Surely I need the help now - I'm 20 - it's horrendous to be going bald this early! I don't care if I have to shave my head when I'm 30 - I just want a bit of hair now. But I can't find anyone (as in a reputable company) who will do it.
Just wondered if anyone on here has had a transplant this early in life? Or could anyone recommend a surgeon who might consider seeing me? Thanks

You may be able to find a surgeon to do this for you, but in general surgeons shy away from this for lots of good reasons. Caveat emptor!

Thanks Mr Driver - I guess there will be surgeons out there who will do anything!

hey stormsinger. sorry to hear about your hair line. the main reason doctors won't operate so early is because young hair loss = aggressive hair loss in most cases. meaning they will transplant hair, but then you will continue to lose your native hair. then how will that look?
before you start transplanting, you have to let the hair loss run its course. once it's stabilized (or you stabilized it by responding to meds) then you can start to think about a plan of action to repair it.

Agree with PappinAce. How many really bad HT's are out there? You have seen them. The front is fine, but the patient has significant enough MPB that they ran out of donor area. If you are going bald this young, it is highly likely you will not have enough donor hair left to make a HT look anything but... bad.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated, and I will research this problem further before taking myself off to a dodgy surgeon!
