What are my chances of going bald if I have only one balding male in my entire family which is my great grandfather on my grandmother's side (maternal). It's scaring the absolute shit out of me because I should not be receding like I am when I look at all the males down my family. I also noticed my crown is in the same place as my grandmother's and I think I have similar hair to her. What are my chances of inheriting that gene off her and going bald? All other male relatives have mature hairlines regardless their age and didn't develop them until mid/late twenties. Is their a way of identifying whether or not I've got the gene in me because it's destroying my life right now. I can't sleep and I can't function properly on a day to day basis because all I'm thinking about is whether or not I'm going to be bald.

As I'm sure you've figured out from your other topics, there's really no way to know whether or not you will go bald until it begins to happen, or how bald you will get. Seeing a small recession (called getting a mature hairline) during your late teens/early 20s may be a sign of what's to come but even that is far from perfect. Since it is genetic, seeing less balding in your family history is definitely a good thing, but there are men who experience significant balding despite nobody else in their family having problems with their hair and there are those where most of their family is bald yet they keep a full head of hair.
Since you're beginning to see issues with thinning you should watch your hairline/crown and take a mental note of what your hair looks like every few months. Worrying yourself won't do any good, plus a healthy/stress-free lifestyle may help mitigate or delay your hair loss. See a dermatologist/specialist that can suggest treatment if the loss is significant- they can also check your hair density to see the current extent of your thinning. Hope that helps.I am a representative for Dr. Sean Behnam in Los Angeles, CA.
