Lurker here -- just had 1500 FUTs and now I'm recovering

Just wanted to say thanks for the forum. It is great to know there is a supportive neighborhood out there. For whatever reason, a lot of my self-esteem is tied up in my hair so when that started to go, it really hurt my psyche. I would have preferred to be one of those guys who didn't give a darn but I'm just not. The 8 months of recovery time is just beginning but I'm glad I finally did something.

    Cheers!

How old are you? When did your hairloss start?

I'm actually mid-50's and while I've always had a high hairline, so far I've been lucky. My 3 brothers were bald in their early 20's, leading to some speculation about my lineage. ;-) As a result, I've been paranoid about hair loss for 30+ years, which is a complete waste of brain energy. I know others have it far worse than I ever did and I closely follow the scientific breakthroughs that seem just around the corner.

Mid-50's? Ah you're a lucky guy. I'm only 25 and dealing with this, and Im still just grateful it didn't happen sooner. The kids at 15, 16 etc they've got it bad. I just figure at least this didn't start in school, or at university. It's still not acceptable at my age to be balding, but I'm just happy I was allowed to enjoy the bulk of my youth up until a year ago when this started.

We need a cure, or at least an effective and affordable new treatment that offers more than vellus hair and potential periodical shedding marathons.

I have a high degree of confidence that researchers will discover a way to simply implant the hair growth cells, since they obviously exist elsewhere on the scalp.

So u have been paranoid about hair loss for 30+ years, that means you have seen the progress of science in regards to hair loss, how many times have we been promised something by scientists but in the end the new treatment vanishes and do u think the hnew treatments show promise or are just another hoax? Thanks would like to know your opinion. - 19 year old who is losing hair

The progress of science is unsteady. It proceeds in fits and starts. But research follows profits and there are billions to be had for whomever comes up with a treatment for baldness. I have looked a some of the recent patent applications and they seem to be looking at growing dermal papilla cells outside the body and then implanting them in the thinning locations. As with every science, there are false breakthroughs so one should never get too excited, but I would expect a significant breakthrough within 20 years given all the money to be made.
