Default Please help - Finasteride already had a shed, will Minox cause another one?

    Dear all,

I've been on Finasteride for about a year now, I had a big shed the first 3 months and knew that it means the treatment is working and the hair will grow back thicker and stronger - It has now been nearly a year and the hair has not grown back, which is worrying.

I haven't been on Minox since around 2011.

I figured, perhaps Finasteride is too weak to grow the hair back that it shed (I understand its primarily used to keep what you have) - So figured, nows the best time to add minoxidil to the mix to regrow that hair.

However, I know both Minox and Fin can cause the shed - I was wondering, if someone with more experience on the subject could give their opinion, but do you believe I will have another shed on Minox (if I do, and it doesn't grow back, hiding the thinning will be impossible, at the moment with a lot of hairspray I can hide it).

I'm hoping that Finasteride wiped out the weak hair and they are now awaiting to be regrown via the boost from Minox, I'm hoping there are no weaker hairs for Minox to shed now as they already have been with Finasteride.

    Is that wishful thinking?

I am using Finasteride 1mg once per day, Nizoral Shampoo every 2-4 days & now will be adding Lipogaine's Minoxidil to the plan (I would get the cheaper Kirkland but I'm told that Lipogaine is less irritating to the scalp and I have sensitive skin).

Please, any input is greatly appreciated.

Minox is very important for hair regime. You should add it. You can try to increase the dosage of fin as well.

    Thank you for your reply.

I've started Lipogaine now but an really worried about the shed my last shed with Finasteride didnt regrow in nearly a year.

Ive read studies where 1mg to 2mg barely makes a difference, however apparently it can increase sides and obviously cost.

Do you think Lipogaine/Minox will cause another shed?

If you do have a massive shed chances are you are a responder to minox. If you are a good responder then you will have thicker hair and maybe regrowth. Why are you scared of a short them shed when you can have long term results?

Well, the issue is, I had a massive shed on Finasteride last year and it hasn't grown back - I'm afraid the same will happen with Minox

So you claim finasteride made your hair worse then? I'd like to see some pics. I hope you are documenting with pics cuz our mind can play tricks on us.

If you are sure fin made you lose hair why are you still on it?

I claim Finasteride caused the shed, and never regrew it - My logic, as far as I hope anyway, is that Minox is the tool to regrow, Fin is the tool to maintain - I'm hoping the lost hair from the Fin shed will be returned with Minox.

However, if Minox simply causes another shed without producing regrowth, I will be left with thinning I cannot cover up anymore.

Sadly I don't really have a good before picture to show, just that I shed a whole lot of hair a few weeks or a month after taking Fin, it shed for about a month and then stopped, I didn't panic as I read up on it and this meant it was working.

However, my hair is still immensely thin on top, especially where most of the shedding took place, leading me to believe it hasn't regrown.

It is not uncommon that finasteride can simply speed up your MPB, period. It legitimately happened to me and many other forum posters. It is common with several medications that, instead of actually working, your body works to counteract it's effects. You reduce 5-AR, your body produces more testosterone to replace it, OR, and in my opinion more likely, your body produces more androgen receptors. Usually in correlation with this reaction, you may experience inflammation and itching, burning and/or crawling sensations in the scalp. IF you legit feel that your hair is worst after a year of finasteride, IT'S NOT WORKING. Please don't buy into the hype that you need to wait two years, or that it's all in your head. Also, PLEASE don't buy into the crap that finasteride works for 90% of people. It's complete, utter bullsh*t. I have four friends that have taken fin and then myself of course. It rapidly sped up MPB in three of us and the other two, it didn't do sh*t for, they keep losing hair. Having said this, I AM a huge advocate of trying fin. It is like gold for some people. For others, it does nothing and for us unlucky ones, it makes things drastically worst.

One, your body will not "produce more testosterone to make up for the reduction in DHT". Testosterone levels raise because its not being converted. As for upregulation, yes I posted a study that showed moderate upregulation in the stromal tissue and minor upregulation in the epithelial tissue. Not nearly enough to offset the massive reduction in DHT from finasteride. If this was a common occurance then why hasnt one person ever shown a clear example of fin accelerating hairloss. We've seen photographic and trichoanalysis evidence of minoxidil sheds but not one study to prove what you're claiming, not even convincing photographs. And studies aside, if you decide not to take fin because you're worried it will make your hairloss worse you are in no position to treat it at all. Theres nothing with the clinical backing that stands close to what these meds can do. OP its common for minoxidil to cause a shed, I'm going through one right now. THis is because hair follicles arent flexible for change in the anagen state. Minoxidil is basically forcingn them to increase in size and this cant be done during the anagen stage. The follicles must be shed and replaced. If you're seeing a dermatologist, stitck to his advice, be patient and have faith that the medications will do their job.
