How many grafts for crown
How many grafts for my crown? 54 years old.

It would help to know the area to fill - if you base it on 50 grafts per square centimetre , this should give you a good idea .
At a very rough guess , I'd say 1000 to 1500 grafts would give good coverage .

He's 54 - I doubt he's suddenly going to turn into a NW7 ! I'm sure any surgeon he consults with will check for miniaturisation anyway .

A good idea would certainly be to consider stabilizing your loss via medical therapy for a minimum of 12 months as this could improve your situation. Then based on the outcome of medical therapy, review the crown requirements for surgery as after 12 months your requirements may well be a great deal less.
