Rogaine Info Please!

So I don't NEED Rogaine at the moment but I do notice my hair getting a little thinner than it used to be so I want to catch it early. I just have a couple questions:

1. This is simple to just use off the shelf, right? Don't need to consult a Doctor?
2. If my hair is not in dire need yet, should I use 5% or 2%?
3. Also is there any chance this makes my hair worse? Say my hair loss isn't as progressed for it..or if I stop it, will it accelerate hair loss or just go back to where it was?

Any bad side effects?
