How much hair were you shedding before minoxidil? Was it the same as youre losing now?
People usually take the shedding that's CAUSED by minoxidil as a sign that it's working in the beginning. As for how long it lasts, you'd have to check some threads, I forget what the consensus is.
Regarding effectiveness on hairline, it works better for some people than others. Officially it's "not approved" for hairline use so it almost always works better on people's crowns.
There have been a zillion discussions about all of these over the years so I can't really remember all the numbers off the top of my head, but I think people generally give it at least 4 months before deciding whether it's worth continuing it? Although it could be 12 months like it is with finasteride.
