Default Quit Avodart 4 months ago, still have erectile disfunction

    Hello,

I don't even know where to start.

I'm a middle eastern guy from Kuwait. 5 years ago I was studying in Australia where my hair started falling when I was 21. I started taking Avodart (Dutasteride) about a year later. My doctor told me that side effects are rare and that even if you get them they will subside with time, or when I stop the pills. I had sexual side effects within the first month but stuck with the drug for 2 years until around early december last year because I had a girlfriend and was getting sick of the side effects. which are basically lowered labido and weak erections.

My doctor assured me that the side effects would go away once I stop the drug. Unfortunately they haven't. it's been 4 months and the sexual side effects are worse now. my labido is still low, my erections are much weaker, and I also have very little semen coming out when I ejaculate. Ive noticed I can go a week and more without mastrubating which is very unusual for me even when I was on the drug.

To make matters worse I graduated from australia in January this year and I had to go back to Kuwait. I saw the doctors here and told them my story. their first impression is that it's all in my head. they said that the drug has no permanent side effects.

one doctor who assumed I was muslim (i'm not) told me that there is no way for me to know that my penis is not working because I'm not married. The presumption here being that you are only supposed to use your penis for intercourse with your wife and absolutely nothing else. needless to say this absolutely infuriated me and I ended up feeling bad about it all day.

Regardless the doctor still made me get a blood test to check my hormones just to make sure. My results will come out next week. But i'm worried that they will brush me off again like they did today. because of religious reasons or because my problem isn't medically accepted.

Im also worried that the blood test will not show anything. I asked my doctor in australia for a hormone test before I graduated, and I remember him telling me that a hormone test won't really show anything in my case, I don't remember why exactly but I think it's because a hormone test doesn't measure DHT or something. so I'm worried that will give the doctors here another reason to brush me off as a non problem.

Guys I know that persistent side effects from these drugs are a controversial topic. I read online a bit and there seems to be a lot of exaggeration and fear mongering concerning these issues. But please believe me that im not exaggerating. my issue is very real. I wish I could prove it somehow. but I know it's not in my head. My girlfriend knows it's not in my head as well.

Please help, I don't know what to do and I'm really worried that I will have to live with this permanently.

4 months isn't an especially long time to be off a drug you were on for 2 years that nearly completely wipes out your bodies production of DHT.

It could take months or even years for your body to start regulating this hormone properly again.

Unfortunately your doctor was a bit reckless in underplaying the potential for long term side effects, but this is a known reported side effect of the drug and it was really up to you to do the research rather than relying on a doctors word before modifying your hormones.

Whether this is a permanent condition or not is impossible to tell. There's no point stressing yourself out prematurely when it might resolve in a few months or a few years. Stress itself is bad for your libido so worrying about the problem is making that same problem worse.

The first thing you should do is address any lifestyle factors that are bad for your libido. If you're overweight and out of shape, that is not going to help matters. If you're smoking and drinking alcohol you should cut those out immediately since both impair your health and libido, especially smoking, which impairs blood flow to your penis. Weightlifting and a diet high in fats are associated with higher testosterone production/libido so that may help recover your sex drive. Having good cardiovascular health helps as well.

Not to mention that even if these things don't help you that much, you'll feel better about yourself for being healthier anyway.

In the short term you could start using drugs like viagra or cialis to help with your erectile dysfunction. It won't be a permanent fix but it will at least help you to sustain a healthy sex life. These drugs have relatively few side effects so long as you're in good health and they're used responsibly, so they can help your symptoms without making anything worse. I shouldn't need to mention that if you take a higher than recommended dose of the drug and take it with contraindicted medications then you can cause problems for yourself. As always do your research and speak to a professional.

If after a few years of living healthily you still have this sexual dysfunction, you could look into hormone replacement therapy. However do not rush into this as a quick fix. As you've experienced, messing with your hormones can have serious and long term side effects. Your body needs time to re-adjust to its new biochemistry, and if you start taking exogenous hormones you may disrupt your bodies ability to recover. If in the future you do start hormone replacement therapy you need to do it in a controlled and well researched manner and have your hormone levels checked regularly by a trained physician. Taking hormones by yourself without proper training or research is a recipe for disaster. Artificially increasing your hormone levels can lead to the same kind of sexual dysfunction as artificially decreasing it, since your body shuts down production of its own hormones to compensate and can have trouble starting up again.

Dut has a very long half life, that plus the enzymes turnover takes another 2 weeks or so. Give it 6 months, try to relax.

Well it has a half life of 5 weeks according to a google so you have had about 3 half-lives, so the amount of it in your system has halved three times. In other words, you have about an eighth of the amount that was in you at the time you quit. Possibly not an insignificant amount. Also, if it's that much of a problem, try a viagra.

It takes 6 months for it to clear your body completely. The research I have come across shows that the sides can well be permanent, but from my own experience a lot can be counteracted utilising weight training and a good diet.

Type into google Joe Defranco's Westside for skinny bastards. Follow that programme.
Eat a high protein diet, include lots of oily fish, eggs, avocados, fruit, vegetables and nuts
    Supplement with:
    Omega 3 oil (3-5g daily)
    Vitamin D3 (5000iu daily)
    Coconut oil (20-30g daily)
    5-HTP (one capsule before bed)
    Magnesium (2000-3000 daily)

and finally if that doesnt help after 3-5 months then I'd look at TRT at high dose for a few month, A DHT gel, Arimidex and come off using HCG and clomid to help stimulate LH again.
