    Default please help me

Hey guys, i dont know if you guys watched the radio show yesterday, i am the 16 year old from arizona. Let me just say that it was an honor to talk to those guys , theyre really great and i appreciate there input. I just have a few questions and i was wondering if there was a way you guys could help me answer them. Is there a way or any test i can go get to check if this is mpb or not , can i go to a hair specialist and get a certain test to get done to check forsure? And also what are the chances that i could actually have telogen effluvium? I read somewhere that in males , 95 percent of the time hair loss is due to genetics, what are the chances that i actually belong to the 5 percent ?

I didn't listen to the show, but if there is some reason for you to suspect that you might not have MPB, then go to the doctors and find out.

hahaha.... balding eagle!! StartedAT16... telogen effluvium is relatively easy to diagnose.

    1) Are you losing an abnormal amount of hair? 150-300 a day??
    2) give a chunk of your hair a light tug... do you pull out more than 5 hairs? do all of them have a white club shaped bulb at the end
    3) What happened 3-6 months ago? Did you experience a drastic physiological event? surgery? extreme weight loss or diet change? Extreme depression, stress or anxiety? Medication???

After a significant event, you can experience TE. I have 3 times and it sucks, BAD!! two of the times was after surgery. Your body immediately sends a larger amount of hair follicles into the 'telogen' phase (resting phase) so that it can divert blood and nutrients to the area of damage. The thing is... it takes 3-4 months before these hairs actually shed. That's why pregnant women, for example, have a good chance of experiencing drastic hair loss 3-4 months after giving birth. TE is USUALLY "self correcting" meaning, that after the insult to the body is removed, hair will cycle back to it's normal state, and in MOST cases grow back.... but IF you have MPB as well as TE??? Then things get uglier. Hair may struggle to grow back, if it does at all, especially in the areas more prone to MPB... get to a derm and IF you're REALLY WORRIED, mention the prospect of getting a scalp biopsy to confirm your diagnosis. good luck brother.

actually, if you're only 16 and suddenly experiencing bouts of drastic hair loss.. I would put money on TE vs MPB... I don't know where you get 5% chance?? That's COMPLETE BS. I think MOST people experience TE at one point or another in their lives. The caveat with statistically evaluating this is the factor that MOST people may not even know they have it.

Yeah i would say im losing about 200 hairs at least a day! At least , on days i shower i lose about 90 to 100 and throughout the day its another hundred and thats because i try not to touch my hair alot but i swear if i were to comb my hair and wash my hair everyday like i used to i would be bald, but the thing is people say they dont see anything wrong with my hair. But its soo long on top , my hair literally just stays up naturally when it used to flop down to my face and i would hate having it soo long because it would cover my face . Its soo stressing , im going through depression and having slight thoughts on suicide , hopefully ill have my scalp biopsy results this friday when i go get the stitches out. Is there any specific test i can do to confirm that this isnt mpb?

Hey now man, you NEED to try to relax and think comforting thoughts... It sounds to me like you're experiencing TE. Do you know what could have triggered it? Think back a few months. Did you start a new medication? Have surgery? Drastically change your diet, or lose a lot of weight? Did you have severe stress, emotional trauma or a physical injury???

-LEARN THIS FROM ME - You will NOT go bald. I am 33, have MPB and have had TE THREE TIMES and I am still not bald. I am just diffused thin every where.

    - While you are losing hair, you are also REGROWING hair... you might not even notice it, but it's happening. You said you are losing 300 hairs a day? do the math man. 300 hairs a day x 30 days is 9,000 hairs!! you have probably 25,000 or so hairs on the top of your scalp, so you WOULD be bald already if your logic is true

    - RELAX.... BAD stress will make it worst. NO ONE notices it, but YOU. and trust me, no one else really cares... You WILL get through this and be just FINE!!

    - You're a f*cking warrior man, remember that. This is a very hard thing to get through, but you're a bad ass for enduring it and you will learn a lot from it..

    - give it a few months and your hair will grow back.

In addition to that epic pep talk James just gave you, I would also suggest that you get to a doctor/specialist and have them check you out in person to get to the bottom of what's going on. As helpful as these forums are, there are some things that are best dealt with by an in person consult with a doctor. It will help ease your mind tremendously no matter what you find out, because you'll at least have knowledge - and knowledge is POWER.

    Best of luck!
