max "1mm"...you dont want to go more than that...because I read that vellus hairs are only like 1-2mm Deep in the scalp skin and you can perhaps damage those vellus hair folicles if you digg too deep with those needles also you dont want to make scars on your skin and puncture the Surface of the skin too much so no more than 1mm and be carefull dont press too hard or you will bleed..I use "1mm" it works fine go for it

Is the 1 mm referring to how much depth the needles penetrate your scalp, or the diameter of the needle?

no the whole "1mm" needle will not penetrate the scalp I Think 1mm needle will penetrate like 0.5mm...not the whole length of the needle...but go with 1mm or 1.5 max...I tried a 2-3mm and it just diggs too Deep and I bleed more

I believe 1.5mm is about the right length for hairloss (.5mm will not go deep enough - especially if you your head is not shaved, 2mm will go too deep in my opinion).

Personally - I just yesterday dermarolled with 1.5mm for the first time - and it hurts so much (I wasn't prepared for it to hurt so much).

Most importantly - make sure you sterilize both the needles and the scalp before and after you dermaroll (I used 70% alcohol).

since you shave your hair then maybe a shorter one will do - but which one depends on the purpose you use it for:
              - for penetration of substances (eg: minox): 0.5mm is the ideal length (there's one study showing it).
              - for wounding: I believe 1mm will be better than 0.5mm since the 0.5 is just on the verge of penetrating the dermis layer of the skin, see the following image:

Can someone suggest me an anesthesia cream? I want to do 1,5 mm roller at a nw6 area and that hurts a lot.

                Thanks

With 1,5 mm without cream i press it less because of the pain and its like doing with 0,75 or something. That means less results.

I've been using a 1.5 and yes it hurts but not that much that I can't take it. 1.5 is basically the ideal length if you are trying to promote growth factors. Anything less is used to imhance the penetration of topical treatments. Peach fuzz is minimum 1.5mm below the skin so to generate growth factors at that dept, you'll need at least a 1.5mm Derma roller.

Just a little trick for less pain...

If you roll a gentle back and forth on your entire scalp before starting your actuall wounding treatment, your scalp will numb up a little bit so that when you go at it, the pain will be less. It really almost becomes pleasant to a point.
Personally, I roll a quick back and forth motion over my entire scalp with very mild pressure before I start rolling with actuall pressure that'll get the 1.5mm Derma roller 1.5 mm deep into my scalp.

It really helps with the pain. There are times when it feels good to roll as crazy as it sounds. Even tho it's painful, it feels good.

Either way, what you should keep in mind if you're trying to promote wound healing is, peach fuzz is located 1.5mm to 2mm below the skin surface so anything less will not generate growth factors for peach fuzz follicles.
