Default Dr. Lindsey First stage of multistage burn scar repair in young lady McLean VA

This nice young lady had a severe chemical burn last summer resulting in 2 large bald areas. We plan to excise the top scar in 2 or 3 serial excisions, about 6 months apart in time, then transplant the remaining small scarline. After that is done, allowing hair to hang down and cover the lower scar, we'll likely do the same for it.

Shown are her preop, intraop, and 1 week suture removal pictures. Also a short video is shown.

You'll note that when we excise large scars like this...its kind of like Forest Gump's box of chocolate....you never know what you'll get in terms of scalp laxity. Therefore I started at the top edge of the scar and initially excised about 40%. Then we pull the wound together and if there is still sufficient laxity, I excise more. I was able to get about 60 to 65% of the top scar out and do a 3 layer closure. I'm hopeful we'll be able to get all of the rest of it out in December...but it might take 2 more cases.

These cases are very gratifying for all of us here at the office. This young lady has essentially been confined to wearing a hat for a year now...she got married about 3 weeks ago and has a great supportive husband.

I've asked her to chime in, she may be able to depending on legal counsel.

We'll almost certainly have significant followup on her over the next few years as her treatment continues.
