What to do?

I'm 22 and from the UK. I've noticed my scalp has become a lot itchier in recent months and I've been shedding more hair. Now my hairline hasn't receded and I still have a lot of hair left. So I've started using Nizoral which has made it less itchy.

I figure it's pointless speculating about whether I am going bald or not unless I can get it confirmed. How do I go about doing this? Should I go and see my GP and get him to refer me to dermatologist? I'm not really sure about what the procedure is for this would it be considered an unnecessary referral would I have to pay to see a dermatologist for example with this problem?. I figure that if I am balding I've caught it early and can hopefully maintain a fairly normal hair thickness and hair line.
