Because its an evolutionary mechanism. Healthy hair, face no acne, no missing limbs etc = Healthy. And health is the most important thing when it comes to survival.

anyone who says they don't care about looks is lying, unless they had a lobotomy then you can't unprogram yourself from being a human being willing to survive.
